Question Ankle: Bone marrow edema turned into cyst

Hi everybody

To make a long story short, I was injured while playing soccer in September 2010. It took seven months until I was correctfully diagnosed after a MRI showed a severe bone contusion with bone marrow edema. It has been recovering extremely slowly the last 12 months and in December 2011 I was told that 90 % of the injury was gone according to a new MRI.

Now, however, 21 months after the injury, a third MRI has showed that the injury has "healed", but a little intraosseous cyst with a 5 millimeter diameter has appeared in the medial malleolus.

My ankle is a lot better than before, but I still have sporadic pains while walking, driving or exercising. I can also feel 99 % good for two weeks, only to feel a lot of bothering/slight pain for days, and so on. I think part of the problem is that I am not walking properly since I have been protecting my right ankle for so long because of the pain.

I need to wait more than a month to see my ankle specialist again since I am on vacation abroad, so I have been trying to find out what I have and what do to in the meantime. Can anyone of you read the following MRI report and give an opinion? I have read it a handful times but I really dont know if this means that I can return to sports or if a surgery is my next option. I am really confused now.

Quote:
"There are no signs of bone marrow edema, but with basis of the medial malleolus seen towards the tibiotalar joint it has appeared a little intraosseous cyst with a 5 millimeter diameter. Not severe clinical significance.

Other than that normal conditions with the skeleton structures. Even and nice joint surfaces and good cartilage height in the tibiotalar joint, as well as in the subtalar joints. No sign of bone marrow edema or hydrops. Intact ankle ligaments.

No signs of patology with the achilles tendon or the plantarfascie, normal presentation of tibialis posterior and peroneus tendons.

R: No sings of actual patology, a new little bone cyst has appeared in mediale malleolus."
I would really appreciate some input on this. Maybe anyone has had a similar problem?
