Are you sure it's IBS? Are you sure the doctor didn't say IBD? The former is Irritable Bowel syndrome, the latter is Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Night symptoms mean that there's something wrong with your intestines themselves making IBD more likely.

What other symptoms have you been having?

Re: Please help....having bowel movements while I am supposed to be sleeping.

Yes he did say IBS...without any testing. I have in the past had rectal fullness and bits of constipation when I am on my prenantal. I am experiencing for the past two years an achy feeling under my ribs..not sure if its my back or what. Basically now I am experiencing normal BM in the morning and then sometimes I will go at night about one right after another.....a lot of small BM......I just had a baby and after my last baby the same thing happened but then it went away. So maybe it will take awhile for my body to get back into sync.....

Twenty some years ago I was also told I had IBS with no testing. Turns out now that I have had crohns disease all these years and not IBS. Butterfly is right in that IBS is not supposed to bother you during the night but IBD will. I would be forceful with your doc in requesting testing.

Re: Please help....having bowel movements while I am supposed to be sleeping.

i am not waken up by BM but when I start to get ready for sleep then I will have to go....again and again. I never have D and I have never seen any blood at all. A few years ago my bowels were tested and it showed no blood. My bowels problems started after having a surgery a few years ago.....then from then on off and on....Could it be possible diet has something to do it with? Medication????etc...etc....I am going to see a specialist soon so he will I am sure order me a colonosopy.sp I will get to the bottom of it.

Interesting that you had it after the surgery....what kind of surgery?

It could be diet....do you still have bowel problems when you're fasting?

Re: Please help....having bowel movements while I am supposed to be sleeping.

I had a leap precedure done to scrap pre-cancerous cells of the cervix.....I had a local done....Right after that (could have been stress related) my bowels totally went hay wire for a few months then I got pregnant and it calms down and then acted up again after I had baby for a brief time. Then during stressful situations it would act up again. I was taking iron pills with my prenantal and I realized that that caused some C. Had another baby and it did the same thing but only to stay around alittle bit longer...Now I have three children....It's very stressful for me to have 3 under 5 years old. So I am thinking that might be the problem.

I havent fasted. The only time I have gotten D was when I was under lots of stress. Moved to a different state and had a severe allergic reaction to a medication. Other then that I dont get D and I havent fasted. Should I?

Re: Please help....having bowel movements while I am supposed to be sleeping.

Well, your symptoms do sound like more of a functional problem..i.e. irritable bowel syndrome--especially if it's linked with stress. However, I'm not sure how often you get diarrhea, but if you find that if you fast and you STILL have diarrhea--something might be going on.

If you have the time, try not eating for 16 hours and see if the diarrea happens. You should try not to drink anything either....keep in mind that if you haven't eaten anything and you drink water, it'll pass right through you and it can give the impression of diarrhea when it actually is not.

Re: Please help....having bowel movements while I am supposed to be sleeping.

Well...I cannot fast right now I am nursing my baby. I am getting much better....i started adding fiber, lots of water and exercise and I am seeing a big difference. I just know from my past experience the pattern it has made.....and it always happened under stress. As for the D.....I never ever get it....but I have in the past....past.....past....Thanks for you help and input.
