Unexplained upper rt quadrant abdominal pain/need help!

Hi. I'm new here and was hoping that someone here may have had similar symptoms.
I have had constant pain in the upper right side of my abdomen - just under my ribs (and epigastic pain) for 6 months now. It started suddenly and has NEVER gone away since--I have it 24 hours a day. The pain feels like a strange sort of pressure from the inside - like something is trying to push its way out of my abdomen because there is not enough space for everything to fit. The pain gets worse when I eat (anything). I cannot eat or drink more than about 4-6 oz at a time w/out suffering terrible pain - as a result have lost 20+ pounds (and I was not heavy to begin with).
I have NO lower abdominal pain at all, No pain on the left side of my abdomen, and NO bowel changes or symptoms. The pain never moves and it does not radiate to other areas.
My pain also increases after physical activity. I definitely feel pain when twisting my adbomen and cannot sleep on my side at all either.
I too have tried the gluten free and IBS diets - but they have offered no relief at all.

I have seen a multitude of specialists (GI (2), Infectious disease, gynecologist, urologist, nephrologist) and have had a battery of tests including CAT, MRI, HIDA scan (gallbladder and liver), Upper GI, endoscopy, enteroscopy and tons of blood tests for everything from lupus to Celiac to lead poisoning. ALL tests have been negative.
I am on Elavil for the pain (but it is not helping). I also tried parasite meds and Zelnorm but neither helped.
The surgeon I consulted with is pretty adamant about NOT doing a laparoscopy since all of the other tests have been negative - he doesn't think it will show anything.

I am desperate to feel like a normal person again...to be able to eat a normal meal and to end the constant pain. I don't know what to do...since none of the tests I had showed anything AND no one is willing to do a laparoscopy to potentially find something that may not be showing up on a scan - I am left to suffer in misery with no answers and no help. I seem to be at a dead end...

Has anyone had a similar experience or can anyone possibly shed some light on this situation? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks.

Re: Unexplained upper rt quadrant abdominal pain/need help!

I am so sorry you are suffering! I know how you feel. A couple of years ago I had a similar problem. It wasn't constant pain though. It was in the upper right quadrant like you and it felt like an annoying nagging pressure type pain. Kind of like a cramp you'd get while excercising right after eating. It came and went for like 2 years. I went to a bunch of doctors too with lots of tests. I know how frustrating it can be when no one understands and no one can help! But you know, one day it disappeared. It lasted such a long time and I can't figure out for the life of me what the heck it was! The only thing I can tell you is that try not to worry too much because all of your tests came back negative. It might go away just like it came. I've had chronic nausea and stomach aches for like four years. Nothing has helped. Hang in there and try to be comforted by the fact that nothing seems to be wrong--meaning no life threatening diseases or anything. Let me know if you need to talk more.

Nicolee-
Thanks for you reply. It does really help me to know that I am not alone...even though I often feel like I am the only one who understands the pain I live in constantly. I know that I should feel comforted by the fact that the tests come back negative...and that thankfully I don't have something life threatening. But all it does is make me crazy...that I still have this pain, and that I feel like I am starving to death b/c I am afraid to eat b/c of the pain. I KNOW my body and I know that I am not crazy and that I am not making this up-- which is what I feel like every time another test shows nothing.
The worst part seems to be that the longer this goes on the LESS seriously MDs seem to take me when it should be the other way around.
Thanks for the support and for lending an ear...

Is it a sharp pain?I have something similiar as well, but is happening on both sides under my ribs.I find that when I am under stress or talk about stressul situations it's almost like a "flareup."It feels like something is knawing.Like a fist trying to come through. It also happens in my middle of the upper abdomen.A knawing feeling. It doesn't burn.I'm sorry I can't help you on the problem but I think I may experience something similiar to you in other ways.

I don't know that I would describe it as a sharp pain. It feels like something in the upper right side of my abdomen is simply too big to fit. It feels like an organ or something is trying to push its way out. "The fist boring through" description is closest to what I feel. It is definitely not a burning...more of a constant pressure from the inside pushing out. For me it is only on the right side and never moves and it always gets worse when I eat.
Have you had any success w/ any medications? Especially if it flares up w/ stress perhaps you should speak to you MD about trying a low dose anti-anxiety pill...maybe that would help???

Re: Unexplained upper rt quadrant abdominal pain/need help!

I know it was back in January when you posted this but have you found any resolution to this? I have the exact same thing. I have had a Sonogram, nuclear stress test, a special gallbladder exray, and now a CT scan and nothing shows up. But I know it is there! Very uncomfortable, much like what you said about an organ not fitting and it never goes away.

Re: Unexplained upper rt quadrant abdominal pain/need help!

Hi,yes I still have it.I was talking about this with my friends a couple days ago actually. It's in the middle between my ribs, upper part.It makes me feel sick, nausea at times. But as I mentioned a long time ago it gets this way during stressful times. It's weird? My friends had gallstones and asked them about the symptoms, but what I experience is not like a gallstone attack. It's gnawing.I haven't seen the doctor about it,I have been taking gravol to help with the nausea part of it.

Re: Unexplained upper rt quadrant abdominal pain/need help!

Unexplained uncomfortable knawing feeling in the upper right side of my stomach area, just under the rib cage. Feels much like something is wedged and needs to come out or like an organ is to big or something - like you want to reach in there and take whatever it is out and things would be back to normal. Bothers me after eating and is there 24/7. I have had sonogram, nuclear stress test, CT scan, and a special gallbladder exray. Nothing. It's so odd because I know it's there but they can't find whatever it is. Has anyone experienced this, and if so, what was it? I've taken rolaids, tums, pepto, nexium, maalox, previcid, protonix, for my GERD but this is different than my GERD, it is continuous and won't go away. Does anyone have any insight on this? I would be most grateful. thank you.

Re: Unexplained upper rt quadrant abdominal pain/need help!

I do not know if this might be the problem but i had a pollup removed and the dr. gave me hyoscyamine for colon spasms. Spasms of the colon can be very painful. The pain is like a burning for me; but the meds calm it down. I am told that the spasms can last for some time. You might see if the hysocyamine would work. best wishes

Re: Unexplained upper rt quadrant abdominal pain/need help!

I just started reading this topic and I have the exact same thing I think. It started about 12 years ago in the am when I bent over to put my stockings on and it felt like a cramp that when I touched it would feel hard and I have to massage it so it stops cramping. This has happened on and off for 12 years and it stays the same. I have no idea what it is and neither does my doctor all I know is that I have to stand up straight when I get it and massage the hard mass like cramp.I cannot sit down until the cramp goes away.
