Angry Should Metamucil make you feel worse than being constipated?

I cannot believe I'm posting this..but here goes.

I'm 40. I'm always constipated. My doc told me to try Metamucil up to 3x per day (that's the max). So, I started Metamucil about 10 days ago...2 doses per day. Well, I'm MISERABLE. Where I used to go to the bathroom about 2x a week with very hard, dry stools, now I go every other day, and the stools are more "normal"...but that pain that I am having is incredible.

On the day that I don't have to go to the bathroom I feel "ok". But the next day, I wake up with a SEVERE pain in my lower left back/buttocks. Right to the left of my tail bone and radiating out to my hip. It is a VERY sharp pain...almost steals my breath away. Sort of like a side ache when you run.

Well, I ususally have that pain all day, and I may be able to go to the bathroom a little bit. But the pain persists until I am able to have a "healthy size" BM...usually in the evening. Then BOOM! the pain is gone...till two days later when it starts all over.

What is up with this? My dad was just diagnosed with colon cancer...I'm a bit afraid that this might be that? I'm 40 years old.

I am drinking 8 or 9 glasses of water per day. Only one cup of coffee per day...no soda at all.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: Should Metamucil make you feel worse than being constipated?

Hi,

I have gut pains from gas with metamucil at times. I don't take it often, I use it to bulk up diarrhea from my ulcerative colitis flares, or from IBS. It works really good.

I think that since your dad was diagnosed with colon cancer, make an appointment with your doctor to send you to a gastro specialist so that you can get to the bottom (pun intended) of your symptoms. Have a colonoscopy done, you are a candidate based on the fact your father was diagnosed with it.

The prep is worse than the procedure. I've had 5. The threat is always there with people with UC over 10 years. So far, so good.

It could be the peristalsis (digestive movement) as well as the gas with a more bulky stool that is causing the pain. Your gut is getting a work-out, that's for sure....not used to it.!! Are you getting enough exercise also?

I get severe back pains daily, and have noticed they are relieved at times from a bowel movement. Makes sense, many people with UC complain of that.

But, no matter what suggestions you get, and even if it's just gas, I think you should still get a colonoscopy done to make sure everything is doing fine. Dysplasia cells (precancerous) can be detected and treatment sought.

Oh just another thought.....are you using the metamucil that's sugar free? If it's the orange sugar-free one, there's aspartame in it. That in itself can cause severe cramping.

I use the smooth, but there's the regular one with no flavour that can be added to juice.

You may consider to add acidophillus (probiotic) to your daily regimen (or active acidophillus in yogurt). It will help to keep the gut flora balanced.

Actually, coffee has a laxative effect and increases bowel activity. It may actually help you.

I hope you feel better soon,
quincy

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply Quincy. I do have an appointment with my doctor on Monday as a follow up on my cholesterol meds (Zetia), so I'm going to tell her that my dad is now losing a fight with Colon Cancer and ask her when I should get my first colonoscopy. I'm afraid to have it, but I'm not going to let that stop me. I've got a wonderful family, and I want to make sure that I'm here for a long, long time for them!

I'm hoping that my body will get used to this Metamucil soon.

The exercise part is a good point...I'm looking at Mr.Treadmill right now...guess I have to start exercising more often than once or twice a week!

Thanks again.

Hi Miriam,

Im having a colonoscopy done on Feb 20th. The GI doctor is ordering an anesthesiologist to put me completely under. I know most people just get some sort of sedation, but i was really , REALLY afraid to have this test done. Due to him having to check some other stuff while in there and that he will have to go in further , he said he wanted me knocked out.
I cannot take Metamusil and its funny when i mentioned to my G I doc that i couldnt drink that, he made a face saying most people cant. He prescribed Miralax. Its tasteless, a white powder, very smooth and works within a few days also.
Im still having pain in my lower right tho, and it can only be semi relieved when i have a BM. It never goes away completely tho. Ive been up since 3:30 am with the pain so I think more is going on in there than just constipation because with the miralax im having several BMs a day, and it still HURTS!!
Pleaseeeee, get your colonoscopy done. If youre afraid of it, ask if they can give you extra sedation to get you thru it, or something to calm your nerves before as well.
From what others are saying, the prep procedure is worse than the actual procedure. At this point, I just want to get it over with and see what is causing the pain.
Hope you get some answers soon hon.

Hi Jen,

Thanks for your post. Sounds like you are having a rough time, I hope that things go well for you and that colonscopy turns out good.

I was supposed to see my doctor today, but the clinic called, my doc is sick so I had to reschedule. I AM going to talk to the doc about whether or not I should have a colonoscopy now since my dad now has colon cancer which has spread to all his major organs.

I don't have a problem drinking the Metamucil although I can't say that I enjoy it! I'm getting pretty good at chugging it though. Is that Miralex natural like Metamucil? I'll have to go and check it out on the web, it sounds better than Metamucil!

Good luck with your tests.

Re: Anybody else have any opinions? Thanks!

Well, it has been a few days, and I'm still hurting so badly, so I'm going to stop the Metamucil. There must be something out there that works a little better than this stuff!

Re: Should Metamucil make you feel worse than being constipated?

Miriam,
Miralax is a presciption laxative --polyethalene gylcol.
It is an Osmotic type like Milk Magnesia, Epson salt, and
Citrate of Magnesia that should only be used occasionally.

Metamucil should be started off slowly because your intestinal bacteria does break it down causing GAS. But it usually goes away with continued use. You also have to drink enough water to make it work.
I have been using it 20 years.

I have been using it 20 years.

I have been taking Miralax for about two months now, and it is helping for sure. I was told by my Primary Care Physician that I could take it indefinitely. I am scheduled for a colonoscopy next month, and when speaking with the Gastro Dr. that is going to do the procedure -- he confirmed that I could use Miralax indefinitely. I hope so, because it is the only thing I have found in 10 years that has helped at all.
Brenda

I want to clarify that I am on a low dose of Miralax. Perhaps that is why my Drs. say I can take it long term. It acts more like a stool softener than a laxative for me. Brenda

Hey Brenda,
Same here, Ive only been using Miralax for several weeks but it is working for me. I am also having my colonoscopy Feb 20th, but the GI doctor said I could also take it indefinately and yes it works as a stool softener for me instead of a laxative and I also take the low dosage. Hope I can stay on it, since it works for me. My mom uses metamucil and it works well for her. I guess I got scared off Metamucil because I was taking it and it would only constipate me more and give me the most horrible pains. Then one day i threw up after i drank it and it was choking the life out of me, seemed it wouldnt end. I know I was drinking enough water, maybe i just THOUGHT i was and wasnt really, i just know im actually nervous to take that. But my mom swears by it tho and she wouldnt want anything else.
Jen

This is a difficult subject to talk about and I am glad you are posting about it. If it were something easier to discuss I think people would have healthier colons...I remember a teacher of mine instructing the class the importance of maintaining a healthy colon, that in between the lecture topic...He wore jeans, a leather vest, boots, had grey hair in a pony tail, wore an earing, must have been in his 70's and very smart but eccentric It's funny that was what I came away with. Every day, him mentioning colon health right in the middle of lecture out of the blue...Anyhow....

The longer fecal matter is in the colon the dryer it becomes, making it difficult and painful to pass. The colon naturally contracts to move fecal matter along to in effect stimulate & produce a bm. Was diverticulitis ruled out?

Drink 9-8oz. glasses a day (at least to compensate for the drying beverage). Add fresh squeezed lemon juice. I use lemon in my diet and it does help in this dept (along with magnesium). Some medications cause systemic drying, so if you take them and that's the therapy you choose then you'll have to compensate with dietary changes. In the morning drink prune juice. Practice sitting down the same time every day for a few minutes (but not too long) and don't overcook foods and take your time & chew your food well. Activity stimulates bm also. Your bowel is becoming regular and think your on your way but you have to kick it up a notch and add more things to your diet that will promote bm and reduce constipating foods. It is possible to become so dry to cause impaction. Fresh lemon is a natural boost to help digestion. Have the colonoscopy performed.
Improved bowel habit & health will reduce risk of colon ca.
