Took Dulcolax and felt sick

Okay yesterday morning I took dulcolax( 15 minutes later i felt like throwing up) to go to the bathroom. Never went. Its been 24 hours so I took some Milk of mag just now.
I havent been able to get anything out. For the past year or two I have been having very small bowel movements and now for the past 5 days havent gone at all. By small i mean like 3 little rabbit pellets. Occasionally I would have a Medium but for the most part always small. I have never been a big bowel movement person but this small is killing me. When I first got married I lived in massachusetts in an apartment building and i always had diareah. When I moved to Maine 5 years agao I havent had much diareah. Now i have small hard to push BMs. What do you think??

Re: Took Dulcolax and felt sick

Wow jx,

sorry to hear about your problems hon. I know how terribly uncomfortable contstipation can be. Sometimes i think personally of course that its worse than diareah, but thats me of course since i suffer from constipation.

I have tried just about everything and even MIralax , which is a med the doc gave me, but darn, i can never regulate it. Its either not enough or suddenly its too much and i have diareah for days on end and i mean even after i drink water. So many times and nothing but water coming out. Very hard to regulate. I know Harry highly recommends metamucil or the equivilant of it that he buys at walmart i think. I couldnt take metamucil cause it would make me sick to my stomach, something about it just didnt agree with me.
Im taking shakleys herblax and it seems to be working. Its in a tablet form and the way they explain it is take two the first night, if nothing happens, take 3 the next, and on till you have a good bowel movement. I have found that 4 work great for me. Only thing is i have adhesions , going to see a surgeon in a bit today, this morning. Ive never been able to take dulcalax either. Made me sick too, although when i felt i just couldnt take it anymore i would use the supposotories in the dulcalax brand. It would help. The doc who did my hysterectomy many years ago told me to use it. ANyway hope you find some answers hon. I know Harry knows alot about these things, hopefully he'll see your post and offer some advice.
Peace and hugs,
Jen

Re: Took Dulcolax and felt sick

Just wondering if your under alot of stress? Stress can cause ALOT of upset in your bowel movements. Even something like moving from one place to another in the same area or out of state can reek havoc on your system. Try a fiber supplement like metamucil. They have wafers that are good if you can't stand the taste of the stuff you mix. You can get it at Kmart or Walmart. If the fiber doesn't work you might want to consider seeing a doctor.

Re: Took Dulcolax and felt sick

I felt sick while on Dulcolax too! The stuff didn't help me at all. It only made my constipation worse. What you could do now is to take Metamucil. It will bulk up your stools. If Metamucil doesn't give you easy passing stools, then switch to Benefiber. You also need to relax and try not to think too much about bowel movements. Wish you well.

Re: Took Dulcolax and felt sick

Ducolax made me sick. It made my mouth taste like metal, then I threw up.

Not to be too graphic, but not everyone one goes everyday. It all depends on your lifestyle, active or sendentary, what you eat, medication, supplements, stress level, etc.

When you do go, the perfect stool, floats, no joke. If it doesn't then you adjust your life until it does.

If you are constipted and take fiber you could get backed up and get impacted. That is not a good thing. You have to watch when and why you take fiber. If you feel that you are not going because you have hard stool, then you need a stool softener until you can adjust your diet and lifestyle.

Fiber is for instances when you don't eat a well balanced diet, you are not active, constipation from meds, etc.

If I were you I would opt for a stool softener, and then eat more fiber and be more active. Fruits and veggies.

Laxitatives are over rated. You can do the same thing with food and LOTS of water.

If you really feel that you are backed up go buy some stool softener. That will help in the end
