aparent stomach virus last too long? - Bowel Disorders Message Board

I have had what apears to be a stomach virus for about 3 weeks now, symtoms are alot of gas, mucus in stool (posible mixed with some blood [still getting that tested]), and hard stool. I am a vegan, have not been sick for 3 years at lest. This stomach virus is taking over my life, i have been forced to not goto college some days and even work. I have tried milanta and gas X to rid myself of the problem but of course neither worked. i was going to try imdium advanced, but it warns not to take it if there is blood in your stool.

I have changed my diet in attempts to minimize the gas with no resolve, it seems what ever i eat will cause gas.

Welcome to the boards. You came on for the same reason I did. Although I don't know about blood in your stool, your diarrhea may be related to an irritable bowel condition. Are you under a lot of stress lately? Or had a life changing event recently (good or bad)?

If its a light colored blood, then that would indicate an abrasion somewhere near the exit point of your BMs. If its darker in color, it may indicate something else going on further up your system.

Immodium is good but I never take it regularly, some on these boards have indicated that it is too harsh on your system.

I dont have diarrhea, i wish i did, it is better than constant gas, which i do have. I am under no stress, i am the last one to get stressed out, and no life changing events.

my brother had a stomach virus with throwing up, diarrhea, and eventually constipation. So i am assuming i caught it from him.

the apparent blood is lighter BUT does not cover the solid parts of my BM's just the occational flemmy parts that tend to come with the gas.

You may have a bacterial infection. I would say go to a gastroenterologist. I recently had a bout of something for almost 5 weeks, and after taking a round of Cipro for a uti, I got well. It was amazing because I was so sick for so long before getting any medicine.
