9 year old with encopresis feels alone:( - Bowel Disorders Message Board

Hello all, I am sooo glad I found these boards, I was wondering do any of the children who are old enough have support groups, or talk on here to help eachother feel not so alone. My son is nine, and we have tried all the typical solutions, diet, fiber, meds, enema's, now he is set to see a specialist on the problem. He said the other day "I don't think this will ever go away, I don't believe there is a cure" Which in all reality, there isn't, but, I am doing everything I can to help him and his school is too. They have been wonderful...

Has anyone found a disposable pad, or underware that isn't so bulky and noticable for kids in school? He doesn't want anyone to find out he is wearing them , kids can be so darn cruel, because they don't understand..
Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated..thank you Robin

Sorry, I am new to this board and just read your post.
We use panty liners to catch the staining. It won't be any good to catch a real BM, but it is easy to change if it is only staining...
Just make sure to change them regularly, because sometimes the plastic in them irritates a bit.

Panty liners! What a great idea! Now I wonder if I can get my son to use them? He just has the leaking, not any major bm. Boy this would sure save on the hours I spend trying to get his clothes clean when he has an episode of leaking! Does anyone have any ideas to get the smell out of the clothing? I usually can get it out, but I have to wash his pants seperatly from everyone elses, use lots of detergent & fabric softner & then I do a final wash with nothing in it. Panty liners would save on my water bill too!

If you find the pants as soon as he soils them so have the best change of getting the small out. If you don't have time to wash them, just rinse them and keep them under water (like you would do with cotton diapers!!). I usually get the undies to smell ok after a wash, once in a while I grab the whole lot and bleach all of them. Also, if you live in a place where you can dry them in the sun, they will be cleaner and smell better!
And then, after a while we just toss the ones that are a lost cause (I stopped buying the fancy princes underpants and all, we do the cheapest from Kmart and buy bulk!)
Oh, I also find that if you use the more expensive powder, like tide with bleach, it does a much better job, at least you would not have to wash them twice!

I try to get them right away, but once in awhile some tend to make their way under his bed (boys!) I have found that using fabric softener works well. My problem is that he goes to his dads every other weekend & his dad will just throw the clothes in a bag & send them back dirty. That is when I have the problems getting the smell out. I have gotten away from the nylon type jogging pants for him as well as they seem to hold the smell more.
