Hi, me again - boy you are probably getting sick of my questions..lol

Wondering if there is a GI Nurse or Dr out there with some knowledge on genetic history. My mother passed away from colon cancer related surgery at 55 and I was wondering if this would be considered a 'strong family history' of colon cancer as referred to in previous discussions? My mother's mother passed away at 86 from pancreatic cancer.

My mum's oncologist said my sister's and I should have colonoscopies from age 40. I am now 28. Should I consider it earlier? I am still at the stage where I am not ready to cope with any tests as the memory of waiting for Mum's tests results is fresh in my mind. Makes me upset just thinking about it

It's terrible really...I just want to get on with my life and stop being so worried about the 'c' word constantly. Life is meant for living I guess...

I cannot advise whether you should start with the exams at your age as that would be up to your doc and he suggested age 40. I can take and tell you that yes you have a strong family history of colo-rectal cancer since your mother was you direct relative and not a cousin down the line or something like that. Perhaps someone else can advise you on when to start with the tests.

As you know the best way to prevent colon cancer is with prevention. Having colon exams finds the pre-condition before it becomes serious ---when it's in the Pre-Pre----cancerous condition.

I had half of my colon removed in March for several divericulas that were (chronic) bleeding but the Doctor told me most of it was removed because of condition that may cause problems later on in the future. To correct the present problem ---all he really needed to remove was about 8" but he took 36". I suggest get the testing done--- it will give you peace of mind!!!

I absolutely agree with Harry. I'm new to the board, but not new to health anxieties or IBS. My father passed from colo-rectal cancer 18 years ago. I had myself convinced shortly after his death that I had it, too. The mind can be such a powerful thing. I finally convinced my doctor to do a colonoscopy, and once I discovered I was okay, the depression and anxieties dissipated over time. Even though your doctor says to begin at 40 (which is really true for someone with no symptoms), do yourself a favor and demand the test just for your peace of mind. Believe me....the anxiety over having the test done far outweighs years of worry and stress otherwise. This ain't no dress rehearsal - we only go 'round once, you know. Live a happy, peaceful life. :-)
