Question Please I really need advice

Hi, This question is from my daughter in law and myself. I am the proud gramma of an adorable 17 month old little girl. The problem is she has such large bulk stools she has a lot of difficulty passing them. Yes we have taken her to the pediatrician who recommends cut down on pasta, milk, and cheese and gave her a prescription for colace which does not work all that well. It breaks our hearts to see this little one strain so hard to pass a bowel movement. Sometimes it completely exhausts her so she lies in our arms afterward just completely worn out. This just is not fair for a baby. Please, any advice to what we should do would be so appreciated. Thank you

Kaseyjcf,

As you may already know everyone needs fiber for their Gastro system to function properly. Yes---- even very young children ---I would try psyllium that is in Metamucil Wafers/ cookies but consult your doctor about the dose.
A stool softener like Colase may just not be enough. Some people and I'm sure children need more fiber in their diet than others!!!

I think it sure would be best to solve the problem NOW than later.

God Bless---Harry

I would second what Harry has said as very good advice, but would also add that it is a good idea to cut out dairy and try cutting out wheat as well. Even at this age, she could be having problems with wheat and it can cause problems in later life also. Cut this out and see.

Kasey,
You did'nt happen to mention if she is still on formula. If there is iron in her formula that will cause constipation. My oldest daughter had that problem when she was a baby. Sometimes a formula made of soy will help-Good luck in finding the problem!
I know what you are going thru. B-Jean
