Smile Bowel Resection With Ureter Stints Question! Please read!

I am scheduled for a Bowel Resection of the Sigmoid Colon next week due to chronic diverticulosous. My surgeon mentioned during my consultation he would be having a urologist put stints in my ureters during this surger.

I do not understand what colon resection surgery has to do with my Kidney Ureters!

Could someone please explain>

thanks,

Jimmy

Re: Bowel Resection With Ureter Stints Question! Please read!

Hey, Jimmy....welcome to the boards I am guessing here...having had a bowel resection the ureters are in fairly close proximity to the colon and there is a high risk of them being nicked accidentally during the procedure particularly if done laproscopically. Perhaps your surgeon does this as a precautionary measure. Stents are usually put in when there is a kidney stone or occlusion to the bladder...do you have a problem that would warrant this being done???

Also....if you would like information on what to expect having a colon resection for diverticulitis...the thread I started has a ton of info that I feel would really answer any questions you may have as to what to expect before, during and after surgery. Hope I helped out....Goody

Re: Bowel Resection With Ureter Stints Question! Please read!

Hi Jimmy,
I had 2 1/2 feet of my colon removed on 4/4/2002 because of chronic diverticular bleeding. Starting at the rectum which is about 8" long and all the sigmoid plus some. It was done through a 13" long incision-- from just below my breast bone to my pelvic area.
I have not any problems urinating-- I would have some serious questions about the reasons for stints since it appears you have some doubts about it also.

If you have much removed and end up with a much shorter colon-- the signals you get for a BM are sometimes different.

God Bless--- Harry

Re: Bowel Resection With Ureter Stints Question! Please read!

Jimmy, Your doctor is giving you wonderful care with the stints. Don't worry about a thing! My husband's surgeon, also a colon rectal specialist did the same thing. He said the tubes leading from the kidneys to the bladder are not easy to see when peforming colon surgery and they can be cut...which is no big thing as long as the surgeon sees what he has done before closing...the problem would be a cut or nick that would go unnoticed. Therefore, our surgeon had scheduled a urologist to put colored stints before hubby's colon surgery. The urologist was scheduled to do her thing 30 minutes prior to the colon surgery. In hubby's case, however, his surgery was stopped because she did a cystoscope before placing the stints and found a small bladder cancer tumor....we are certainly grateful for having found it in the very early stage (1/2 inch..noninvasive). Consider yourself fortunate to have a surgeon take this extra precaution!

Hi Jimmy,
Stints are used to identify the ureters to keep from cutting them. With diverticulosis, things can become inflamed and stuck together so the doctor could have a hard time identifying structures.A colorectal surgeon must be doing your surgery as they tend to put in stents about 80% of the time.
