Unhappy Severe constipation my whole life, tried everything, could this be a serious problem?

I am 23 yrs old and for as long as I can remember I haven't been able to have normal bowel movements. Sometimes I will go 3-4 weeks without one. I have a WHOLE lot of pain in my right side and sometimes it gets really bad and I end up going to the ER thinking something terrible is happening to me. But they always say they can't find anything wrong with me besides the fact that my bowels are completely full, packed from end to end. So they give me laxatives, enemas, stool softners, etc. It never works though. I can only have a very small bowel movement and I always still feel full. And of course the pain is still there. For 6 years I haven't been able to sleep on my right side because of it. I have tried everything...changing my diet, herbal remedies, suppositories, laxatives, enemas, etc.

Could there be something here the docs are overlooking? Has anyone else had this or heard anything of it? The only tests they do are xrays, ct scans, and ultrasounds. The docs tell me that if I just take the enemas and stool softners that in a few days it should clear up, but it NEVER does. I am tired of the pain and taking laxatives and not to mention all the money this has cost me for the meds and doctors. I have yet to get any results whatsoever, nothing has ever changed, only gotten worse over the years. Is there some type of disorder that could be causing this? Please ,any help or advice will be great...

I know that you say that you have tried everything- but I will mention these anyway:
Magnesium supplements, Vitamin C supplements, digestive enzymes, more and more water, elimination of milk and/or wheat from your diet, exercise, allergy testing.
Any new ones you have not tried in that list? Milk is constipating for myself & my boys- and I seem to be chronically magnesium deficient. I have to take magnesium every day.

For your intestines to function properly you need to intake 20 to 30 grams of fiber daily, drink water and exercise.

I think you need to start taking a water soluble fiber supplement like Metamucil at least twice daily.

Yep and you might want to check with doc about the possibility of a mega colon. You need to use the metamucil probably 3 times per day and continue with Docusate aka colace. If by the third day you still haven't had a decent BM then use either a dulcolax suppository or a baking soda enema. Usually I say glycerin suppository but since you have severe problems you need to stick with the bisacodyl aka dulcolax suppository until you get things under control. As already mentioned if the suppos doesn't work use a baking soda enema or a soap suds enema. I don't know if any docs still recommend it but it used to be in severe cases you would give a 3H enema which is a real medical term for a High Hot and Hellofalot enema. If you don't have a sufficient BM with the enema repeat with another enema until sufficient results are obtained. If using a soap suds enema be sure to follow it up with a baking soda enema to help get rid of all traces of the soap since this can be a bit harsh. Be sure to drink prune juice or eat prunes daily and you can also get fiber paste to use instead that is manufactured by the Hormel company. You can order this by the case for home use. Also be sure to keep your intestinal flora in check be eating yogurt with live active cultures or take acidophillis capsules. Ask the docs though about the possibility of a mega colon though.

I say don't get hooked on crap like Metamucil, there are much better fiber supplements out there that are not full of chemicals like Metamucil. I use "Super Seeds" by the Garden Of Life company, or ground-up flax seeds is good.

You need a good probiotic. Try Primal Defense, it has helped me. It is easily available on the web or at any Vitamin Shoppe.

I also agree with an above poster about eliminating dairy from your diet, and all white flour and ALL white sugar. These things all stop up your colon like glue.

When you get in a bind with not having a bowel movement, try a good colon cleanser instead of an enema or laxative. Dr. Richard Schulze has a really good one, and it is all natural and not habit-forming.

From what I can see the doc you mentioned with the herbal formula has senna and casacara in his formula and those are laxatives. Regardless if they are natural or not those still laxatives. The original poster has a medical condition causing her problem which the docs havent' been able to figure out which is why I suggested she get checked for Mega colon. This poster needs to get the cause of her problems figured out with a doctors help so all the suggestions offered were to help her get things going until the docs can figure what it is that is causing the problems.

Unhappy

I have been told that I am packed full to-several docs I have seen laughed when I thought it was mega colon cause this was suggested to me also. I don't have the urge to go. When I take fiber-I get so full to the point I feel like I will explode-but than maybe its just gas. When I do explode I get big round movements. I mean big. So if one can not get help for a mega colon how does one solve this themselves. What causes a mega colon.I take a magnesium citrate before bed too and it don't help. How do you know if its gas or you are really stretched out.SIck of this problem! And docs only advice here is fiber and laxatives. Everymorning I pass maybe 3 inches or less that is it. Unless I explode and its gas when I do. I take fiber and drink plenty of water too.

I still recommend seeing either a colonics therapist or a naturopath, preferably the first, as opposed to a medical doctor. Medical doctors will not help you with preventive care so that this problem does not happen again; they will only treat the symptoms and ignore the true causes. They are not trained for anything more than that.

Megacolon is a condition where the nerves to the large intestine do not work correctly. A doctor would have to diagnos this and since I had a hard time researching it on the net I get the impression they don't use this diagnosis much any more or if they do there just isn't the large amount of info. As for spirit I think you will need to retrain your bowels. To find out about doing this you might do a search here as I have posted that routine quite often for people looking for help getting off the laxative and enema routine.

Your gallbladder can also cause constipation. I suffered for almost 3 years before the Doctors found out I had a gallbladder problem. My gallbladder was only functioning at 7%. They can only determine this by doing a HIDA Scan. Most Doctors only think about gallstones, but if your gallbladder is not functioning properly it can cause several problems.

GoldenGirl,

How was your gallbladder condition corrected? Did you have stones, or was it something else? Has your constipation improved as a result?

My gallbladder was removed. I did not have gallstones, my gallbladder was only functioning at 7%. It definately cleared up my constipation. I would also feel extremely full after I would only eat a small portion of food-that also went away.

can they surgically remove the buildup from your intestines? This is what works for me...lots of excersice (walking, running, bike riding, lifting, crunches) This helps mix up everything in your gut, stimulates your metabolism, and stengthens your abdominal walls.... water, spinach, whole grains, apples, cherries, salads, all other veggies and fruits, fish, no cheese, or a lactase supplement with dairy consumption, Also Kashi cereal and Clif bars are great, they are balanced and have a lot of fiber.....I used to not go for sometimes 5 days, that was miserable.....be care of laxatives though...that was my problem, I was getting dependent on them, and I didn't eat right....Find a doctor/specialist that you can trust....keep your head up....someone will help you

Also, if you eat enough fruits, veggies, and whole grains, you don't need a fiber supplement....What good is it to you, if you eat a terrible diet (sugar, grease, processed foods, preservatives) and have to combat that with a psylium supplement? We would never eat psylliym husks, would we? FOr me change of diet and regular excerside was MUCH better than supplements
