Friend of mine was diagnosed with IBS and possible Chrone's Disease. This latest doctor prescribed her Amitriptiline. That is a behavioral modification drug used for depression, am I not correct? Has anyone ever heard of this helping for IB?
Hi, there. I take Elavil (same drug) for fibromyalgia pain. However, some doctors believe that in low doses (10-25 mg) this drug can also help with pain/spasms from IBS. However, it can make a person drowsy, and your friend should be at home taking it for the first few days until the body adjusts to it. I take mine at night (to help promote better sleep/reduce FM pain) and I'm still groggy in the a.m. from it (called the "hangover effect").
Some docs believe that depression is part of the IBS cycle, and may prescribe higher doses of Elavil to combat depression. The belief is that less depression, less IBS symptoms. It won't cure IBS, but may relieve some of the symptoms.
Hi I have a copy of a document regarding amitriptyline that was in the British Medical Journal stating that it is used also for pain and IBS - if you want a copy email me direct. I take nortriptyline for IBS and Fibromyalgia, I find it has less side effects
I suffer from a bad case of IBS. The latest drug I'm taking is Prozac, which is also given for depression. It helps to increase the amount of serotonin in the body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates many things including digestion. Your frind's doc likely put her on a similar drug in hopes that the increased amount of serotonin in her system would better coordinate her digestion. I haven't been taking it long enough to see if it will work, but I can keep you posted if you would like.
Hey
Im a bowel disease sufferer and i have been prescribed amytriptyline as well but for joint complications. For me the antidepressant was given as an aid to pain killing in both systems as my bowel and joints will keep me up during the night.

Wendy I'm sorry this is off topic. Are you the same Wendy who had ETD. I'm going crazy with it and I am in so much pain most of the day. If you are the Wendy I'm looking for please let me know how the PE tubes worked for you.
