I've been having spells of anal irritation, burning after a BM, some itching, and some soreness. I went to the GI doctor and after an examination, he said I have anusitis (inflamation of the anal tissues). Now, I do have one hemorrhoid, but he said the tissues were inflamed all around and up a bit in the anus. This was only a visual and digital exam. He was not worried and gave me a hydrocortison cream to use for 10 days. Now, I get this off and on all year long. I read some articles that said diet and stress had something to do with anusitis. Could it be that I have been eating alot of oatmeal cookies, coconut and more raw fruits. I used to eat everything steamed or baked. Maybe the foods are causing some sort of toxin in my stools that irritated the anus. Also I have had a lot of antibiotics in the last year. Anyone else have/had this problem and were you put on a low residue diet? Your suggestions will be appreciated.
I don't think there is anything wrong with your diet. When they say bad diet, they mean things like caffeine, alcohol and smoking generally. What might be happening is that you are getting some part of your feces onto the outer skin which causes a rash and the like which can spread. Try avoid using toilet paper and showering for a while instead and see if that helps. If showering is not practical, try using either wet tissues (which you can buy eg to wipe babies' bottoms) or very soft tissues and be careful. If it does not cure the problem, it can only help.
TaniaF, I was told I have anusitis after having a sigmoidoscopy & anoscopy, it was'nt as bad as the extreme pain I had been having for over 5 mths. The kneeling chair/table thing helped alot, course the 1st visit hurt due to the chronic pain I was already in, after medication ie: supp's, the 2nd visit was much easier. The rhoids don't cause anusitis, diet & or stress does. Coffee, colas, beer, garlic, onions, spices/spicy sauces, pizza etc.maybe even chocolate.
Are you sure you have Rhoids? maybe just the anusitis, it is frequently mis-diagnosed as it happens just inside the anal canal and if scope is not done slowly upon withdrawal won't be seen. When you had the visual, what was used? you see I was convinced I too had bad hemmorhoids, but was assured I did not, only anusitis, which is still trying to heal after over 1 month of prescribed suppositories & much care in what I eat now. Anurex also has been recommended & I do try to use it, I cheat sometimes & sit on a frozen ice pack, the kind used for coolers, with the blue liquid inside.
Thanks for your post--I thought I was the only person with this problem. I only had visual inspection by Gastro with his eyes--no anuscope. He said anusitis but didn't discuss why this happens. I am a very high strung person (stress) and I try to eat healthy, but I guess I need to watch certain foods. Sometimes my stomach gets upset and other times I can eat all the spicy things without a problem. It's ironic, as the same time I have been having the anusitis problem I also have had problems in the vaginal track too. My GYN is wondering if it is vulvodynia or if bacteria or yeast if causing trouble in both areas. Would you know about this? I have been using Anusol regular ointment and baby creams like A & D or Balmex. Are sitz baths good. My pain is not extreme just very annoying and the area looks red. I had one small "rhoid" that was seen at the anal exterior. Is anusitis serious and does it need to be inspected further? Did your dr take any biopsies? Thanks for your help. Looking forward to hearing from you again.
My Doc did take a biopsy, it was negative, actually he said "biopsy revealed healing" that statement I don't understand, but he was not concerned.I also did a stool sample for parisites, which was negative. I never heard of vulvodynia, but looked it up on google, theres lots to read on it. Sitz baths w/epsom salts are good, won't hurt you, but I'm finding Anurex cold therapy is better for me at least. I myself had a pap smear Aug.7 & yesterday went back for the Gyn to tell me it showed a slight abnormality, mild cervical dysplasia & would need a 2nd pap in 6 months, but nothing to worry about now. I had mentioned to the colerectal Dr. that I had a painfull examination with the Gyn & asked him if my rectal problems could be related to this, he told me he seriously doubted that.
I've made a Doctors app't Fri. with my family Doc, not that he's much good, but I generally feel I'm not getting a whole lot better, sometimes my stomach seems quite bloated & feels kinda sick. I also want him to refer me to another Gyn as I don't like the one I have now, nor do I like his exam.rooms etc. Of course I bet that many of my woes are related to smoking, or at least don't help them. In the meantime, I always search the internet for more possibilites that I could mention to these Doctors. Oh, I did have one "rhoid" banded back in July '99. Take care, I'll check back after Fri.
This morning was shear hell, made me cry, 20 minutes after eating a banana, or it could have been the rutabega I ate last night, I just don't know what could have contributed to this extreme pain. Dr's app't was for 11:40, checked in at 11:45 due to last minute BM #8. Had to keep walking around outside till my turn came 45 min.later. While telling Doc, I'm not getting better & have much trouble using Anurex, I started crying, I just could'nt help it, because of that he prescribed me 642 propoxyphene for severe pain & ativan sublingual lorazepam for panic attack, the ativan is a tranquilizer, sheesh! If this weekend goes bad, I'm going to call the colerectal Doc on Mon., make a 3rd app't. Theres got to be more to this so called anusitis than diet/stress.
Tania, I felt like you,...could there be toxins in my stool? Theres no pain like rectal painhttp://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif
If anyone has more thoughts to offer please do, thank-you.
Your diet has everything to do with your condition. Avoid eating junk foods, bread, beef, diary products, alcoholic beverages, spicy foods, chocolate, watermelon, strawberry, mangos, bananas. Eat fresh water fish, pork, steamed vegetables.
Thanks for all the posts.
Is is possible that you have IBS? The bloating, abdominal pain and loose stools seem like syptoms of IBS. I have had a spastic colon since I was 20 and now 51. I change from constipation to loose stools day after day. I get bloated somedays, have trapped gas and have cramps periodically and I have a mild case. Now, I went to my GI nurse practitioner, (who I think is even better than the doctor) because I felt like I had GERD. I do take Prevacid daily and I asked her if my acid problem could contribute to the anusitis. She said that people with loose or diareah could well be eliminating an acidic stool and this is irritating. Feeling a little better down there, but this comes and goes. I too went to my GYN just yesterday cause my lower abdomen felt achey. My pelvic exam was OK and just cleared up a yeast infection. I also had a sonogram done and this eased my mind about uterine buildup--I was afraid to use the estrogen cream they prescribed for my menopause because I was afraid of uterine problems. The burning I have is not only in the anus but vagina too. I think they are linked somehow. Going for my colonoscopy on Sept 19. Wish me luck!!!
Hope you feel better soon--keep in touch.
I also don't understand why not watermelon, & banana ?
Tania, I'm glad we can discuss these problems here, kinda comforting. IBS is possible indeed. Eliminating a acidic stool is very interesting. You've also reminded me that yes, back in my 20's or earlier even,(now 46) doctors had said I was having "lower intestinal spasms" that caused abdominal pain. I also have a hiatus hernia & acid reflux (since'95/96), and take 20mg Losec in the morning when required. Come to think of it, this past year I didn't feel the need to use it regularly & if I suddenly developed bad heart burn would use Pepcid Complete, as losec won't work once heartburns' already set in.
What I miss the most regarding this anusitis, is not using onions & garlic, how can you make any decent soup without these?
Its not just the burning glass feeling after BM's, there is the pulsing throb pain, thats hammers now & then, or as yesterday hammered for over 3hrs.
Tania, good wishes to you for the 19th, hope all goes very smoothly for you . Is this your 1st routine colonoscopy?
Sonogram, is that the same as an ultrasound?
Sorry so many questions but perhaps we can learn from each other. Take care
So sorry I am late responding to you--been away from my computer. I'm really upset as my colonoscopy was scheduled for Sept 19 and now I'm sick with a nasty virus. Regular dr said to reschedule when I feel better, was worried prep would really due me in since I have been weak with this cold thing. This is the second colonoscopy that I had to cancel due to illness.
What kind of doctor can use an anoscope to at least look inside? Is is really painful--do they use some sort of lubricant to help? My problem get better and then comes back. I think the tissue area always looks red, but sometimes doesn't hurt. I worry about cancer, but I'm not sure if there is such a cancer from inflamation.
I hope you see this post as I would like to talk with you again.
Hi Tania, sorry you have had to cancel the test, Hope you feel better soon.
If your family physician does not have an anoscope, a referral to a specialist is required, like a proctologist or colorectal surgeon. The anoscope is a short, tapered, hollow tube, narrowing at the tip, with a light shinning through it, & allows inspection only of the anal canal. The tip will be lubricated & also the anal canal. I actually went back on the 12th, its not painfull, just a little discomfort. So now I've had the anoscope & sigmoidoscope 3x, just the 1st one was very uncomfortable as I was already in severe pain. No major prep is required as long as you've had a bowel movement before exam, otherwise a Fleet enema is used 1 hr before leaving home for app't.
I asked his nurse when I should have a colonoscopy, she said wait till your 50. Dr. asked if I had any stomach pains, I said no, as I wasn't having any that day, but I guess I had forgotten that I have had some in the past & even today for approx. 15min. after eating.
As per the book I bought "Advice from the Rudd Clinic"
it states:- All colon cancers originate within benign polyps and most all polyps in the colon can be removed before they become cancerous. Colon cancer is one of the only major cancers that may be stopped before it has a chance to start.
Hope this may ease your mind some. Take care.
I think you guys have a yeast infection in your gut (and allover your insides).do you get lots of vaginitis? RED skin round vagina/anus, that burns ?? have you taken antibiotics? is your tummy bloated? sick feeling? pain in ovary area? does smoke bother you? do you have skin rashes like eczema,phsoriasis/ ringworm? cracks on feet, or around corners of mouth? headaches? DO YOU CONSUME ALOT OF SUGAR? ALCHOHOL?BREAD?FRUIT? AND NOT ALOT OF BROWN RICE< OATMEAL< VEGGIES? (remember fruit has sugar). research online for "yeast infection in gut." youll be amazed. I had one. i consumed lots of sugar while pregnant. My baby was born with it all over. she couldnt breastfeed because she had it in her mouth(thrush).her belly is HUGE and distended. she had brite red rashes all over her butt. I had a brite rash under my boobs.and had a big vaginal yeast infection while pregnant.(but it wasnt cottage cheesy/ it was more that i noticed the discharge... and some itch. I didnt have a doctor tell me this was the problem. my doctor huffed at me when i asked about it, and she said there was no way for you to get yeast in your gut. My conclusion was made with hours of research and putting clues together. I emplore you to do some research on it yourself. " the yeast connection".
