Blood during BM, part of IBS? - Bowel Disorders Message Board

I was diagnosed with IBS during a colonoscopy back in 1997. On and off I'll get the severe stabbing pains in my lower abdomen and take Bentyl, Levsin.

This episode, that started about 4 days ago, has caused me to have multiple bowel movements...the stool is loose but it is solid, not watery. The stool is very bloodstained each time and what seems like a lot of blood drips into the toilet as well, and is on the tp. There do not appear to be any external hemorrhoids. I don't know about internal ones or how I'd even know forsure. Nor do I know if internal hems bleed so much that they drip into the toilet.

I've had several episodes just like this...it seems like they come every 3-4 months and last a couple of weeks. I have made several appts to revisit my gastro; but, the appts are always 3-4 wks away, and by the time the appt gets here, I'm never having the problem 'at that time' so I cancel.

I have an Internal Med. Dr's appt late next week for some other medical concerns and I intend to bring this up when I see her; but, I'd really appreciate any advice anyone could lend me until then.

I have hemhorroids that have bled like that. It terrified me the first time, I was stunned, as previously I'd only had staining on the tissue. When it dripped, i was shocked. Went racing to my MD who assured me it was probably hemhorroids, and not anything severe. I made a date for the colonoscopy, and sure enough I had 2 external and 2 internal hemroids....but do get checked out!

I think every rectal bleeding problem should be checked out.
I have a friends daughter that kept having a little blood and finally had it check at 39. She had a condition called polyporsis and her colon was just carpeted with polyps---literally hundreds.

She had her entire colon removed and anus re-done. Most people with this condition never live to be 39.

Please don't take rectal bleeding lightly--- just for your peace of mind.

As you may know colon cancer is the number 2 killer of cancer deaths.

Hi Lulu,
Definitely get checked out...I had similar bleeding, to the point were it was dripping after a bowel movement...(Ekkk, I panicked) After a colonoscopy was found to be a polyp (not a nasty one thank god) and was removed.

Thanks for the advice. I am seeing an Internist this week for other reasons, so I'll bring this up too. Maybe she can call a Gastro or Procto for me and get me seen a lot sooner.

When they remove a polyp, do they do it during the colonoscopy?

I had blood in my undies today, and I had a hysterectomy almost a year ago, so I know it's nothing from my female parts...99% sure it's from my booty. I really want to get it checked out sooner than Thursday (or later depending on when they'll be able to see me).

If it's internal hems, what can they do to alleviate that? besides the surgery? My stools are already pretty regular, so I don't think adding more fiber will help that much. Just curious.
