Rectal bleeding, and questions, please help me.

Hi everyone--
I have IBS and some other systemic problems (Fibromyalgia, Central Pain Syndrome, and I think Lupus too but not officially diagnosed w/ Lupus). My symptoms are more like an inflammatory bowel disease but when I had colonoscopy last May 2004, it was negative but I did have one polyp removed which was thought to be the reason I was having fecal occult blood and also rectal bleeding. I do have hemhoroids (no idea how to spell that one) from having children. Today, I had a BM that was not particularly painful but I had a lot of blood (with blood clots), the water was totally red in the toilet. Well, I keep having the urge to defecate (which I have frequently sometimes with no result) and every time I sit on the toilet, I find more bleeding bright red blood and small clots. It doesn't seem to be bleeding in my underwear or anything. I'm just wondering what should I do? Should I try to treat it like hemhoroids and use the cream etc... to see if it stops? Should I call my doctor? This has just been going on today. I'm not sure if this is associated with my bowel or with hemhoroids. My hemhoroids usually hurt quite a lot when they bleed (and have never bled this much) and they're not bothering me, maybe it's internal? Not sure. I just wondered if someone could offer some thoughtful advice. Thanks!

That much rectal bleeding with clots needs to be checked out ASAP. See the doc and get this checked out right away.

Sounds like you need a second opinion. Don't wait a moment longer. See a specialist like a gastroenterologist if you haven't already and perhaps have another colonoscopy. I was diagonsed with ulcerative colitis back in '97 and your symptoms are the same as what I went through. I was given anti-inflammatory drugs that only worked as temporary measure as I was in and out of hospital with flare-ups up to 4 times a year, for sometimes up to a week at a time. But to stop the bleeding immediately I took Salofalk (mesalazine) enemas. They worked a treat when nothing else did. About a year ago my aunt suggested going on a wheat-free diet to see if that helped. It certainly did. It's been like my cure! I haven't had any flare-ups since taking up her advice. If only I had done this sooner! If you do discover you have IBS or IBD try cutting out wheat. I know it might sound hard to start with but you can still eat the same things, except buy things with wheat-free flour and try wheat-free rye bread. Hope this helps.

Re: Rectal bleeding, and questions, please help me.

ahhh dang it,
I thought that's what I might hear back. Thank you both so much for your responses! I hate going to the doctor for things of this nature, oh well, we don't get to choose our symptoms do we. Thank you very much for the advice, I will make an appointment with my doctor. I haven't had any bleeding today but I haven't had a bowel movement either. Can I ask a question though?? I did have this happen today and it has happened in the past as well---
I get hit with pain in my low back that feels like tremendous menstrual cramping however it is so bad that it makes me nauseous. It will go on for about 20 minutes to an hour. I lie down when it happens and that helps. I also notice I am more bloated when this pain hits like this. It doesn't happen often but it is recurrent. Have either of you had this or know what it is? Thanks again for your help!

Hi,

I would get your doc to send you to a Gastroenterologist to get properly diagnosed.

I have ulcerative colitis and your symptoms match mine.

It shouldn't be assumed your symptoms are hemorrhoids, polyps can bleed as well.

Definitely ease up on some foods that can cause gassy symptoms, but it won't help the bleeding.

If you do have UC, I caution taking prednisone before considering the 5ASA meds (orally and rectally).

Re: Rectal bleeding, and questions, please help me.

I just joined these boards after reading quite a few posts.
In 1997 or '98 (I forgot) I started having some blood in my stool and I went to a GI doctor for an exam. He gave me a sigmoidoscopy that day without a cleanout and even though he only got up about 15 cm he said that there was some inflamation on my bowel. He gave me some meds that weren't strong enough and scheduled me for a colonoscopy. I wimped out FOUR consecutive times (after prepping the night before ) over a period of months and decided to switch doctors.
I started to go to his partner and HE gave me a sigmoidoscopy (he got up around 30 cm high or so) and I had BEGGED him to withdraw the scope.
At that time he diagnosed me with "Distal Ulcerative Colitis " and put me on ASACOL (400mg 4 tabs 3 times daily) AND ROWASA medicinal enemas (medicine in enema form that you squirt into your colon at night and let the medicine coat the walls...anti inflamatory). During the first several years it seemed like my disease was managable and my distended stomach had gone away and the bleeding was intermittent...BUT he still wasn't able to get me in to have a full colonoscopy.

I have had the following symptoms...bloody lower caliber stools(very thin or shapeless)...some distention of my tummy...etc.
Well I am also anemic and he wants me to take iron supplements).
BUT....sporadically within the last few months my symptoms have gotten worse and I am back on the ASACOL ..with Rowasa (I had gone off of it for over a year without telling him yet I continued the Rowasa at night).
SO NOW...I can't seem to digest solid food without having urgencies to empty my bowel...and I am freaking out because I have convinced myself that It MUST be cancer and that I will HAVE to have the colonoscopy and possibly an operation.
I have serious issues about being poked prodded or being put out with anesthesia.
I need real helpful advice as I sit here.
Right now it is 5:40 am in Michigan and I have to see him at 2:15 pm this afternoon. I have been on an all liquid diet since Tuesday (advice from the doctor who was covering for him the other day) and I can't seem to stop having these symptoms.....distended belly with tenderness and slight pain.....urgency to evacuate bowels....diarrhea...(once with some blood).
I am fearing the worst and have been obsessing again and again...searching all over the internet..cancelling work and feeling like my life is going to be hell and eventually ending from disease.
PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME FIND SOMETHING POSITIVE TO HANG ONTO.
I AM A 51 year old white male with panic disorder and am terribly worried about the worst case scenarios coming true.
CAN ANY OF YOU OUT THERE READING THIS BE OF ANY COMFORT TO ME?
