I had surgery to fix a very deep fisssure and had a sphinterotomy done to deal with spasms back in October of last year..I also had one small skin tag removed and STILL have at least 2-3 larger ones that need to be removed..My current surgeon doesn't want to remove them..yet I am still having serious problems...I think I am reinjuring the fissure..I am in pain again..bleeding and barely have an opening to go to the bathroom once the remainder tags swell up..I want to know if anyone out there ever had lots of external tags removed and whether it was worth it...what kind of pain they cause AFTER surgery..and if they would do it again..the one I had removed didn't hurt too badly...yet I still am wondering if removing that many would be good or bad...I want them GONE...any help would be appreciated!!!
as you know, I had a skin tag (a big one) removed when I had my fissure surgery. It's strnge that your surgeon didn't elect to remove them at the time -since it seems like a good opportunity.
But maybe the skin tag removal made things tougher on me, because recovery has been difficult. I'm 2 months since surgery, and still not 100%. I'm paranoid about what I eat, and I still have to take Colace every day, or risk damage.
I find that if I go twice in one day, I feel pretty lousy. Very crampy and achey. If I have a good BM early in the morning, I usually feel pretty good druing the day.
Try a diet like this....
1. Breakfast: bowl of raisin bran
2. Lunch: salad & half a sandwich.
3. Snack of apples
4. Dinner: butternut squash soup, chicken florentine.
Take some Citrucel at night, but only once a day. If you are still bleeding and irritated, get back on the Colace. A couple days of this diet, and things should calm down a lot.
I still gat spasms here and there, and cramping. Those are the symptoms I've had a hard time getting rid of. My doctor gave me some Dycyclomine, but I'm nervous to take it, because it can constipate. I use Diltiazem ointment, but it doesn't seem to do much for spasms, just tightness.
You know the tags are a problem, when you can see a trench in the stool. I don't see that anymore, since having mine removed.
My dilemma now, is I have a sinus infection, and doc wants me to take antibiotics, but I'm resisting, because I can't risk diarhea -talk about frustration.
My sinuses are so bad, I'm moving from Chicago to a warmer climate.
I did have the one removed and it didn't seem to hurt much...it was the fissure that hurt the most..I think the skin tags are pulling on the old fissure and re-injuring it. I am in too much pain...and now have plans on seeing yet ANOTHER surgeon....the first one I went to see wanted to do MAJOR stuff...the second one was really good..I had very little pain..but she opted NOT to remove ALL of them so in a couple days I have another appointment with a THIRD surgeon..I can't live like this anymore...it seems everytime I eat ANYTHING solid...I have a bad BM and I start to bleed again..it feels so raw that I have had it!!!! I am so worried and fed up..I don't expect to be "perfect" but I should be able to eat regular food with the exception of meat and heavier stuff! I am really wondering though if removing all of the skin tags is a bad idea.....I know I can't stay like this...but I do want them GONE! If I can find a DR who will just re-repair the fissure and remove most or all of the skin tags...I will be happy....and I know what you feel like with the sinus problems...I have severe allergies and bad sinus problems too...everyone in my family has the same problems too...air cleaners help, stay away from smoke, anything that dries the nasal passages out...cold air is bad too....I have to dust, clean and keep things really clean..it is crazy..I was dusting something the other day and wham I got sick...sore throat, dry nasal passages and now I have a slight sinus infection myself...when I get like that I use regular Neosporin..I line the inside of my nose with it to get rid of the irritation..otherwise everything I breathe in becomes an irritant....Good Luck moving to a warmer climate...I always feel better when its warm...but still I get sinus infections in cold AND warm air...I figure wherever I live..I will be sick so I just live with it...miserable though?
What do these fissures and skin tags look like. I have a ball that is bigger then My exit hole and it feels like i have to use the bathroom when I really dont. What is it I have. I am only 20 years old and i had bump there for awjile but ever since i tried to clean it its gotten worse. I mean it weaks me up at night and when I sit I cant move. I need help serious help. What should I DO
a fissure is a cut in the lining of the rectum...very painful and it bleeds...a skin tag is a bunch of loose skin near the opening..on the outside....Mine swells whenever I have to go to the bathroom.....yours sounds like it could be either an external hemeroid or an external skin tag....they can get really sore...wiping irritates the tissue...going to the bathroom can sometimes pull the skin tag...a hemeroid can swell..bleed and hurt....you can try preperation H to see if it shrinks down.....but it is always a good idea to see a general practioner..who can externally look at what you have and tell you if it is anything to be worried about.....its better to KNOW exactly what your dealing with.......embarrasing as it is to see a DOCTOR...don't stay like that...I was too embarrased to see anyone but did eventually since pain like this can ruin your life and at 20.. there is no reason for you to LIVE like that....there are so many medications that a DR. can give you to treat things..the key is to just treat as soon as you find it before it becomes a constant problem....
I have a large external skin tag - at least that is what all of the doctor's are saying it is. My question is, what is the difference between an external skin tag and an external hemorrhoid? They keep calling mine a skin tag left over from a previous thrombosis but my "skin tag" gets swollen sometimes and when I have an episode of diarrhea, it thromboses. Maybe it's just the hemorrhoid above it that thrombosis and fills the skin tag with clotted blood, I don't know. It just seems like this tag is actually a hemorrhoid.
FIREWOMAN...I have the same problem...I have one external skin tag that seems like a skin tag but FEELS like an external hemeroid...everytime I go to the bathroom..it swells up and looks almost blue..I have a DR's appointment AGAIN tomorrow and hope this surgeon can tell me what do about all the Pain I am in...the other two bigger ones just swell and block the opening.....and rip me to shreds...I am fed up and have been told that a skin tag is just skin hanging out externally..possibly from childbirth, straining during BM's or from an OLD hemeroid....to me that all seem like the same thing but aren't...it is very confusing but I am so fed up AGAIN and in serious pain..so I NEED to get them removed if I am ever to get my old fissure to heal properly (the skin tags are pulling the skin to tight that during a BM...I feel like I am being raked) It will be interesting to see what this new surgeon has to say..I get so discouraged and wonder when this will end.....but am keeping my faith up....
Lexkartel....good luck with your appointment..at 20 you are in the best years of your life...if you need surgery..I agree with Chiggins...you will bounce back quick! Though it stinks to be dealing with this...things will get better for you....
Hey Watchout... thanks for your input. You hit the nail right on the head when you said all of us deserve to be healthy and this is no way to live. I too... have skin tags but fortunately not in that area. I had a lot of tags removed from my neck six years ago but some are coming back. At that time the doctor froze them one by one and lanced them off with a sharp surgical instument. A simple bandaide and some iodine to prevent infection solved the tag issue although I have about five under my arms that need attention. I prey that you, "Watchout", don't require surgery again and I will take heed to what you noted about being careful how I eat. Let me know how things turn out for you.
Thanks for your reply. I agree, skin tags/ hemorrhoids, they all look and feel the same to me. Please let me know what your surgean says. I may give in and go ahead and have my external skin tag removed as well. I am VERY familiar with that raking, stretching feeling inside. Mine also pulsate and throb all day. It is horrible. I just want my life back but am afraid that the surgery will only make matters worse if the recovery does not go well. I suffer from an IBS-type condition where I am either completely constipated or I am having diarrhea - both are bad for recovery.
Anyway, please let me know what your doc says. Maybe I will heed his advice as I to have been to MANY surgeans. I think 4 - and they all had different opinions from "oh yes, you definitely need surgery" to "it's only a skin tag and no bog deal".
I am so glad you came to the boards. I was just about to post something on external skin tags. It is nice to know that there is someone else out going through the same thin that I am (although of course i wish we didn't have to go through this in the first place).
Please keep me posted as to what your doctor has to say.
Hey FIREWOMAN(Dana)...I am really glad you posted too....I have the same throbbing and pulsating pain YOU do! Though..I wouldn't wish this kind of pain on anyone..I am SO happy to hear that you have the same kind of issues down there...you just gave me some much needed info that I NEEDED to hear....I am seeing my THIRD surgeon tomorrow..the first guy was insane..he wanted to do so much surgery( I didn't go to him for that reason...I went home and cried and thought No way!)...the second surgeon was very conservative....she cut the spinchter muscle...fixed a fisssure and removed one small skin tag ( I DID get that surgery and was seemingly better until a month ago) but she was like...the skin tags are small and probably will shrink down....she was an excellent surgeon..no post-operative pain...but I think a little TOO conservative! So I am hoping this new DR. will be not too agressive...but not to conservative either...basically I want to STOP all this pain...yet I am really scared..I don't want more surgery or MORE pain..but I really think these stupid skin tags are causing things to stretch and rip all the time. I am so sick and tired of "the pain"...and sat down tonight with my husband and talked about what I wanted to tell this new surgeon. I kept telling my hubby....if its only skin tags then WHY do they burn, throb, pulsate and rip me? NOW I KNOW, because of YOU...... that YES..this HAS to be the REASON I am not able to heal....I think I might have one internal hemeroid that gets aggravated once in awhile..so I was thinking...MAYBE the pain is coming from there.. It is so hard somtimes to know WHERE the pain is coming from....after awhile EVERYTHING starts to hurt and I'm left wondering what the TRUE culprit is...thank GOD for this board...Now I have even more proof that these darn skin tags ARE causing me the grief! Thank YOU..thank you...thank you!! Hey..I also have IBS too.....I've had it since the age of 14..after I had my gallbladder removed and yes you are SO right...it is really TOUGH to heal the backend when things are so irregular down there. I was taking fiber and Colace and had to stop because they made me go to much..and also made the stools much bigger and with my backend being tight and crammed with skin tags (about 2-3..they can all get as large as a fifty cent piece...yuck) there was No room for the stuff to get out so I got EVEN more ripped...go figure...so Now I am back to eating VERY light food....and have loose stools...but at least I can pass them with little straining....so ridiculous...there is no winning with this.... Talk Later and THANKS AGAIN....what a help you are!!!!!
thanks for the encouragement from You too.....I also have some skin tags on my body as well..just a couple I developed..like the rectal ones from having kids years and years ago..I had plans on getting them removed this spring.....now with this problem...I might have to wait...glad to hear that those don't cause too much pain..cause I've had it with pain in general. I think if I ever recover from this.....I will feel like I just won the lottery!!!!
if I were you, I would find a surgeon, and say "get rid of these skin tags ASAP!" I don't think the surgery would be as tough as a FIS, although there certainly would be some burning and irritation afterwards.
I can't stand the fiber and colace therapy any longer. It makes me go 2-3 times day, gives me gas from hell, and a gurgling intestinal tract. I'm going to slowly reduce the colace, and try and get enough fiber from diet. I have no pain or bleeding right now, so I think it might be safe.
I figure that being on Colace for 6 months can't be good.
Ok, you have to tell me what your doctor said. I just spent last night in soooo much pain and I know it is from my skin tag. It is so big and taking up so much room that I think it is causing some swelling of my internal tissues. I discussed the possibility of surgery with my family because I want it GONE! There is only one, but it is pretty big.
You said that you had one removed before. Was it painful? Did they use stitches or leave you open. I am hoping it is not as painful as a hemorrhoidectomy (althought the tag resembles a hemorrhoid in my opinion).
HEY Firewoman....I haven't gone as of yet..I am going around 4 pm....I am really fed up..so it will be interesting to see what this DR has to say..sorry to hear you are in so much pain....me too...what misery for both of us..I'll let you know what he says....until then....
well I am back and this surgeon was a jerk too (like the first one)..he reply was that there wasn't a problem...so I wouldn't let him check me internally....so the only good thing that came out of this was that I am going to go back to the DR who did my original surgery ( the second one).....if there is a something "fixable" then I'd rather have them deal with it...so thats my story....
I am so sorry. I was hoping for a better response. It's so strange how every doctor has a different opinion. It's like they just don't get it that we are in pain and need help. That this condition is taking over our lives and making us miserable. What is it going to take. I guess just going to different doctor's until you find the one who gives you the answer you want to hear.
Keep me informed of everything. I will be thinking about you.
Hey Firewoman...I have realized by now that THESE Dr's don't care...if they were the ones in pain then they'd be sympathetic...this jerks response was that I had to have normal, softer BMs..then things would get better and I'm thinking....ok..I'm supposed to have normal BM's...I told him I have IBS and NO gallbladder and he said that IT DIDN'T Matter....I'm thinking..oh really..then if it didn't matter....then why DO WE even have a Gallbladdder....we were CREATED with it so there has to be a reason we have one to begin with..what a joke!!! At least my second surgeon told me that YES I would have problems because I DIDN'T have a gallbladder, IBS and my overactive THYROID..which ALSO causes Diarrhea....how crazy...huh?
is your IBS basically constipation? Or is it diarhea?
my doctor seems to think I have IBS as well, although it is a diagnosis by exclusion, and I don;t want to start having colonoscopies and a million other tests. My problems are rectal spasms, excessive gas, and mild constipation. My stool gets hard really easily, so I have to watch it.
I'm sorry you're frustrated, I know how it feels. My GP kept saying "just take more metamucil" every time I saw him about the fissures, which were making my life miserable.
How about consulting a nutritionist? Or maybe going so far as to fast for 4-5 days, to give the bowels a 100% rest, and then slowly introduce foods back in, to figure out which ones cause problems?
