Not sure what to do - Bowel Disorders Message Board

I am a 19 year old female and have had bright red blood appear for about a week everytime i pass a bowel. i am not sure what to do or what it could mean. i am also away at college and would prefer not to see a doctor while i am here and could wait 2 weeks until i go home to see my doctor if at all possible. although my bowels have been occuring normally, they are starting to slow to once everyother day instead of the twice a day i used to get from eating the campus food. does this sound serious or something that might pass on its own? thanks so much for your help, it is really appreciated!!

A lot of people that have constipation have this problem. Usually it is small tears in the rectal tissue that bleed if you pass a dry or hard bowel movement. If you add more fiber and water this might help soften everything up and let the tissue heal.. You should be able to wait two weeks to get it checked out; you are very young and it could be entirely diet related. In the mean time buy some metemucil or eat more fiber and see what happens.

A person needs to intake 25 to 35 gram of fiber daily along with enough water for their intestines to work properly--

DO you really know how much you are getting with your diet???
The wrong diet can cause hemorrhoids as well as fissures -- both can cause bleeding!!!

There's other causes of bleeding as well... some serious, some not. I'd get checked out by a doctor as soon as possible. It's not a normal thing to have rectal bleeding, so you should definately not ignore it.
