bleeding - Bowel Disorders Message Board

I am a 21 year old female and recently have noticed blood when I make BM. It has been going on for about 2 days. Its bright red and its only when I wipe and the blood is not in the toilet. It doesn't seem to be in the stool though. I do have tiny sharp pains in my stomach. It almost feels like hunger pains, although I've eaten so thats obviously not what it is. I haven't eaten anything like beets or anything red, I am pretty positive it is blood. What could be causing this? I read all the other posts that say I should visit the doctor and plan to make an appointment tomorrow. But I was curious about what I should expect and if anyone has any ideas on what this could be? I have also just started birth control 2 months ago. Could it maybe be blood clots? I heard that is a side effect of taking it.

Hi Meg,

You probably have hemmroids, but any rectal bleeding needs to be checked out by a doctor. Please tell your primary doctor about the bleeding, and tell him/her that you would like to be seen by a GI doctor. Depending on your family history, the doctor may want to perform a colonoscopy.
