Is this Thrombosed Hemorrhoid?

Recently had a bad case of constipation, I had to really strain to eliminate some hard stools. Couple days after that, I felt a lump near my anus. The lump is soft to touch but painful to sit on. After some web search, it appear to match the description that of thrombosed hemorrhoid. Will see a doctor in couple of days. In the meantime, what is the best to relief the discomfort? It is painful to sit on certain position and some time painful to walk. What would be the typical treatiment for this type of hemorrhoid? Would this go away by itself?

Re: Is this Thrombosed Hemorrhoid?

Hi there,

Oh yes, thrombosed hemms - I used to get them all the time. I have found that they do go away on their own (the clot dissolves) in a few weeks. The first few days of the thrombosed hemm are the worst. The pain gets better each day but you have to remember to keep your stools soft and eliminate with no straining. This can be accomplished by adding a soluable fiber supplement to your diet like Metamucil and/or adding stool softeners like Colace. They have generic brands for both of these. Also, drink LOTS of water to help the fiber work properly. Take as many sitz baths (warm baths) a day to help control the pain and keep the blood flowing in that area to help with healing.

Let's see, I guess that about covers it. A doctor will tell you the same thing. I have been to a few and this is what they tell me. Now, if a few weeks have gone by and the pain has increased and you have not noticed a decrease in size of the thrombosis, I would make an appointment with a colo-rectal specialist to obtain further advise.

Good luck

Re: Is this Thrombosed Hemorrhoid?

I've had 2 bouts with thrombosed hemorrhoids. Yours may not be truly thrombosed, because if it was, it is the MOST painful thing you will ever experience! It is the most stabbing, throbbing pain that does not cease until it's lanced, bursts or dissolves. No position was comfortable. Not lying down, sitting, standing. All positions were painful Mine would never dissolve with any treatment. I would endure severe pain for 4-5 days and then it would break and ahhhhh... instant relief! Now, when I feel it starting, I immediately begin icing the area. I keep ice on it until it no longer aches. That can be a couple of days. That's the only thing that works for me. I was told by a hemorroid clinic, for bad hemorroids like that sitz baths only make it worse - and it does. Ice shrinks the swelling and kind of numbs the pain as well.

Also, if you take a mirror and look, a thrombosed hemorroid will be dark purple, really dark. Hopefully that's not what you have or are headed because it is no picnic in the park!

Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Re: Is this Thrombosed Hemorrhoid?

Saw my doctor today and was told I didn't have any type of hemorrhoid. What I had was an infected cyst. That lump did bursted yesterday with pus. He prescribed antibotics and some cream.

What do you mean by lanced.

My doc says I have a thrombosed hemm that should go away on its own but after a month or two, if still there, then may require painful surgery. Is lance a surgery procedure.

A thrombosed hemmorhoid is painful but a cyst is worse. The doc treated it correctly.
