anal fissure- hemorroid?

I want to say first that I can't tell you how much I appreciate everyone who has shared thier fissure and hemorrid stories. I have been educated through all of your posts. My story started about 7 weeks ago with a painful bowel movement. I went to my family doctor about two weeks later when the pain did not subside. She checked me and said I had an anal fissure. She gave me suppositories and put me on colace. Neither seemed to help. The colace did not make my stools soft. I was up to 3 a day. I went back. She put me on nitroglycerion jelly. When I went to the pharmacy to pick it up, they really didn't know how much I should use. I went back to the doctor 2 weeks later and found out I was not applying the jelly appropriately. Then I went to the gastro doctor. He put me on Kondrumel. I tried it twicce a day. It really wasn't helping with the hard stools. I was on nexium. I read that it may cause constipation so I took myself off that. Things haven't changed. I am also on Tropol xl for heart palpatations. I checked with my heart specialist and she said that it should not cause constipation. My gastro doctor increased the kondrumel. It helped for two days and now I am back to having a hard bowel movement in the morning. I have incresed fiber by eating all bran for breakfast, fruit for lunch I have Wheat bread and salads for dinner. I have a little chicken and drink water all day. I have cut out sugar, white bread, red meat and all dairy items. This still hasn't helped the bowel movement. I feel as though the hard BMs are also causing hemorroids. I had those when I first got married so I know the feeling.I am supposed to go on vacation the first week in August. I think I will need to see a colon rectal surgeon soon. I am just afraid to go before my vacation for fear that the examination my irritate the situation. Can anyone help and tell me what to expect? Can anyone suggest any ideas? As you all, I am desperate!

Re: anal fissure- hemorroid?

You need to intake 25 to 35 grams of fiber daily-- and it needs to be divided between both soluble and insoluble fiber!!

Soluble fiber bulks up your stool and insoluble causes the intestinal muscles to contact and move your stool ---

Re: anal fissure- hemorroid?

Speechwess,
I know where you're comming from..no fun at all. My sister cured herself of an anal fissure using liquid bandage. Band-aid has a gel out now that I may try, however she used NEW SKIN. She takes a stool softner every other day.

It may be stress but like Harry said try the fiber first.

Do the BM's get softer if you go again in one day?

Re: anal fissure- hemorroid?

I did not know that Harry! I know on the metamucil bottle says 1 tsp is only 2 grams of fiber. Guess that means I need more than 1 tsp. Do they make a fiber that is both soluble and insoluble?? For those who dont eat enough insoluble foods. How do you know how many grams of fiber in a fruit?? Is there other insoluble foods?

Re: anal fissure- hemorroid?

Dee,

Insoluble fiber is fruits and veggies-- all greens don't contain soluble fiber and some fruit and veggies contain a little soluble fiber, nuts and seeds are insoluble --- the part that does not absorb water is basically insoluble. Fruit has its our juice but does not absorb any water.

Soluble fiber is in all grains except the outside husk like corn meal & grits, rice, oatmeal, barley, --- beans & peas like limas, red, black, pinto, green peas blackeye peas etc--the inside not the outside, Root veggies like carrots, potatoes, beets, turnips all absorb water-- and psyllium. Green beans are insoluble.

All meats, seafood and all dairy products do not contain any(ZERO) fiber.

Most books about nutition will tell you the amount of fiber in fruits and veggies.

Most people don't get enough fiber in their diet--- only about half the amount they need for a normal BM. I think the problem is we eat too much process food that just don't have the fiber.

I use psyllium supplement to provide about 7 grams of soluble fiber daily and have for over 20 years.

I have been on this board for almost 6 years -- writing this message-- do a search on Harry --- this is not new stuff!!

God Bless---Harry
