Question Please Please Help If You Can, Need Your Valued Opinions!!

Hi Everyone,

Firstly as i'm new to this discussions board let me start by saying hello to you all My name is Sarah and i'm 32 years old and have been having terrible problems for quite some time now......let me try and explain.......

So, where do i start........well I was diagnosed about 11 years ago following a colonosocopy with IBS that has always caused me considerable pain. My IBS has nearly always followed the same pattern............I eat, i cramp up terribly then i have really bad diahoreah and apart from feeling a bit sore and run down after an attack i can pretty much carry on as usual!! I take anti-spasmatics before i eat most days and sometimes this helps and at other times it doesn't!! Over the last year i have been diagnosed with severe endometriosis and adhesions which i've had 2 ops on already just this year!!

Here's were i need all of your valued and appreciated help...........With this last bout of endo i was getting extremely bad diahoreah and cramping and just a feeling of aching in my left side and fullness!! Sometimes the pain is just so bad I literally can't get out of my bed!! When i feel my tummy it feels kinda hard and i sometimes notice lumps that are sore to touch in my groin area!! To the left of my belly button i've noticed a bulge that certainly wasn't there before!! My gyne kept saying this was bowel related and referred me to a gastro specialist.................After my last Op (in Sept 05) for endo i was hoping that would be an end to my troubles but a week after the op i noticed this pain back again............It might just be easier if i list my symptoms:

Terrible constant bloating of my tummy
Cramping at all times during the day whether i've been to the toilet or not!! In fact the cramping sometimes gets worse after i've had a number 2!!!
Diahoreah
Constipation
A feeling of fullness and pressure in my tummy
Aching legs
Pain that sometimes radiates into my hip and groin
Shooting pains in my tummy and back
Tiredness
Loss of weight (around a stone)
Nausea
Changed bowel habits

To be honest i could go on and on...............I know that this is not my IBS, i'm not silly and if it is my IBS the way it presents itself is totally different to how its been over 11 years!! I've been off work for a couple of months now as the pain is constant and i never know whats gonna happen from one day til the next!! I haven't noticed any blood in my stool but sometimes when i wipe there is blood and in the bowl of the loo there has been a couple of red spots.

I'm having a Barium Meal Follow thru x-ray this Friday to check for Crohns and Colitis and to be honest with you all i hope they do find something just so i can hopefully get my life back........................

I'm so sorry this has been so long but here is where you can help.........If you suffer with Crohns or colitis or anything else please please please tell me your stories and your symptoms etc. Plus i'd love your opinions on what you think could be going on with my bowel...........I know something isn't right!!!

Thank you all so much for reading and i look forward to hearing from you and hopefully making friends with people with the same things in common with me!

Take good care

Sarah - London

Hi Sarah,

I don't know how much help this will be to you, but I suffered all the symptoms you listed (except weight loss) until I eliminated all sugar and processed foods from my diet. Within a week or so, those symptoms along with many other problems (itchy ear and sore finger joints were the worst) all disappeared. I am convinced (now) that my body just can't handle sugar and other processed items. I know now when I did eat something that contained sugar. Many symptoms will return. I feel so much better eating whole "real" foods (meats, veggies, healthy oils, etc) than I ever imagined possible.
Doctors aren't nutritionalists. They know next to nothing about nutrition, unfortunately. I have come to believe so many health issues can be overcome by just a few small changes in the diet, but a doctor will never recommend it. It's something worth considering.

Good luck to you,

The diet that Sarahlou is on, I am on also. These are the things that my gastro has me eating to improve my IBS symptoms - no sugar, refined foods, fructose (fruits and fruit juices), caffeine and red meats. He has his endo patients on this diet as well. He says that eating a lower glycemic diet with healthy oils like Olive oil and taking a fish oil supplement helps keep the inflammatory prostaglandins under control thus reducing inflammation and symptoms of endo and ibs. I know that IBS is not an inflammatory condition but it has helped me. Endo is inflammatory and eating foods that help suppress the bad prostaglandins will help - at least according to my doc.

Having pain even after a BM suggests endo problems as well. IBS pains usually go away after you have a BM, but usually not endo pain.

The blood in your stool could be caused by internal hemorrhids or an anal fissur due to all of the diarrhea you have been suffering with. You mau need to see your gastro just to make sure. It is a good thing that you are having your barium x-ray to make sure you don't have these conditions as well.

Sarah,

Cutting out sugar and processed foods from your diet is good--- But, I have found that when you have run all the tests and nothing shows up and you have pain then you lack something in your diet--

I suggest that you need Magnesium along with calcium. Lack of magnesium will cause cramping as well as muscle spasms in any muscle in your body--- all cells in your entire body contain magnesium.

I like and use the chelated type because the magnesium is bonded to a protein amino acid that is readily absorbed -- the process is Internationally Patented by Albion Labs and sold to many mineral/vitamin manufacturers. The brands I use here is Doctor's Best, Solgar, Kal and Carlson but don't know if they are available in the UK.

But, any organic type of magnesium is pretty good. I also suggest that you take it 3 or 4 times daily to increase the absorption. Taking it only once daily as alot of people do -- you only get about 8 to 10% absorption but taking it more times daily like 3 or 4 increases the absorption about 4 times. Also, magnesium is used in many laxatives and taking it in smaller doses causes some sensitive people less loose bowels.

As you may know the daily requirement is 400 mgms and it is estimated that 80% of people are magnesium deficient-- yet it is in alot of foods. One problem is that a single alcoholic drink will increase the magnesium in your urine 500%. So, don't drink any alcohol not even wine.

Another thing that is probably the best immediate help for cramping /spasms is a homeopathic remedy-- Magnesia Phos taken as needed -- it usually works in 30 minutes or so. Living in the UK it is readily available. But even in the States it is sold at most health food stores these days.

I wish you well---Harry
