rectal bleeding and blood in stool

i have had some form of rectal bleeding for about 2 yrs give or take. it started out very minor. i would see some blood on the toilet paper. the frequency wasn't an issue either. i thought that i was just passing something more than i could handle causing me to tear.

it gradually became more blood to the point where the water would be red like i was dripping blood, and the toilet paper looked like someone had a nose bleed.

only up until recently have i been kind of freaked out. (stupid, i know. we all like to believe we are invincible, right? ) now i am bleeding quite a bit. and it is far more frequent. and within the past few weeks i have even passed what look like blood clots (not dark, but bright red clots of blood) and i've had blood in my stool.

until the blood in my stool, i figured i just have had internal hemorrhoids. i am unsure if this is a symptom or not. i realize i need to go see my doctor because this isn't a substitute for the real thing. i guess i am just hoping for a insight in the meantime. anyone have any thoughts?

thanks.

I think anytime that you have blood in your stools -- you need to get it checked out --just to make sure there is nothing that is really serious!!

You didn't mention your age but bleeding from your bowels is not normal. You can get either a flex sig or colonoscopy to evaluate. The latter of the two is the more complete examination and the recommended. It could be hemmeroids, but I wouldn't wait around since it has been an ongoing problem and has gotten worse. I have been through a few tests to find why i had blood on the toilet paper. Its no biggie.

Re: rectal bleeding and blood in stool

I went to get some blood on the paper checked about a month ago and it turned out to be just a small anal fissure which recurs from time to time due to some poor diet choices I have(including huge amounts of salty popcorn and too little fluids). He did the digital exam to rule out rectal cancer at the same time.
I also asked for a Fecal Occult test and a Barium lower GI X ray examination which came back negative. You obviously have something that should be checked out. Because of your description of the blood I would definitely ask for a Colonoscopy. The prep for all these lower GI tests is the hardest part, getting cleaned out before the exam, and the Colonoscopy is the most reliable test. That will definitely be my next step if my current discomforts don't resolve. Good luck and keep us posted

Re: rectal bleeding and blood in stool

I had the same symptoms (blood clots etc.) it turned out I had polyps which were removed, Im not saying thats what you have but you MUST get a colonoscopy!

Good Luck
