?? about fiber supplements

I've noticed from reading this board, many of you take a fiber supplement, when having loose bowel movements. Aren't these laxatives? I went to Wal-Mart last night to buy some & couldn't bring myself to buy a product that is a laxative?? Please explain this to me!!

Fiber is not a laxative, if you are having loose bowels (well not diarrhea from a sickness or something!), but it is a bulking agent, it makes FORMED stools. If they are mushy it will form them into nice stools. I used to think the same thing until I talked to my doctor about that.

I don't have a problem with loose movements (I asked my doctor the question out of pure curiousity ), but I will take Benefiber when things get too hard (the fiber also works to soften...) - yea, I know makes no sense, I can only liken it to radiation - it causes cancer and it cures it... Benefiber, like the commericial says, does not get thick or gritty, I can't deal with that! I'll just put it in my coffee, it dissolves nicely and it doesn't change the taste of the coffee at all!

You need to take a water soluble fiber supplement. Also drink enough water daily.

A person need 25 to 35 grams of fiber daily to make their intestines work properly. It needs to be a combination of both soluble and insoluble fiber.

Soluble fiber works just as well for diarrhea as it does for constipation!--- It is really a bowel regulator-- not a laxative--- They now call it FIber Therapy.

No fiber supplement gets thick or gritty if you follow the directions.
Stir-- briskly and drink promply!!

I have taken Psyllium twice daily for 23 years.
