Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
Not my business, but I'd venture a guess that they will do surgeries just because they can.
That is, they strike when the iron's hot (i.e. the patient gives the ok). It is their livelihood $$$$
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
Was it an actual hemorrhoidectomy or did they remove a blod clot from a thrombosed hemorrhoid?? Either way, I am in shock that a surgean would do ANY type of procedure "down there" right before giving birth. I mean, doctors don't even want you to push a little when you are trying to have a BM after bottom surgery much less A BABY!
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
I thank you all so much for responding. I had a huge hemorrhoid that started Wednesday afternoon. I called my OBGYN and they told me to get Preparation H and some tucks pads. I tried that and nothing worked. I was up all Wednesday night through Thursday morning. I had a fever and I could tell my pressure was going up. I called my OBGYN at 5am and they asked if I could hold on until they opened at 8am to see me. Neither one of us knew the hemorrhoid was that bad. When I went to my OBGYN he was surprised to see how huge my hemorrhoid was. He sent me to a specialist who is an older gentleman. He said my huge hemorrhoid was thrombosed and so he removed the entire thrombosed hemorrhoid. I had the total hemorrhoidectomy. I must admit that I do feel better now that I have had the hemorrhoidectomy in comparison to dealing with that every huge painful irritating hemorrhoid.
I made my first painful bowel movement last night. Of course I was screaming and don't want to make another bowel movement ever again. It hurt and bled and I hurt for the rest of the night until I took a pain pill which put me to sleep. I hope the rest of my bowel movements will be better. You know I am really not looking forward to pushing through labor but I will get the epidural which I have been debating on getting for the longest. I think I need to get it considering what I have already gone through. Thanks for listening!
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
I forgot to anwer your question about the anesthetic. They put a numbing agent that starts with an N. My mind is so forgetful right now and I forgot what it is called. But he stuck me with a numbing agent in the area so that I wouldn't feel anything and then he cut it all out. I didn't feel anything and felt fine for the first 2 hours after surgery. Then I started taking my pain medicine named hydrocodone because I started having pain.
You know what is so crazy! This is my second time in life ever getting a hemorrhoid. My first hemorrhoid was almost 3 years ago on the first day of our honeymoon on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean!!! I didn't know what it was but called my parents and in laws and they told me it was a hemorrhoid. I got some cream from the cruise ship infirmary and it took it away in a few days. It was a much smaller hemorrhoid though. It seems like when there is something special going on in my life, I get a hemorrhoid! I knew I married the right man when I bent over to ask him to see what it was!!! My husband was awesome in helping me deal with that hemorrhoid and he has been awesome in helping me deal with this one thank goodness!
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
HELP!!I am on day 10 of post op recovery. I noticed that my hem basically looks the same as it did. Its still there and outside of the opening. I am really hoping this is just swelling and that it will go away as this would be horrible to go thru all this and its the same!
I am maybe a little paranoid too as on friday, an internal stich came out. I was VERY surprised when I saw it! Anyone else experiance there hem looking the same? When does it go down, or should I call my dr?
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
Hey guys...I guess I'm an official part of the hem blues brothers now. I'm on post-op day 3. I found this forum when searching the web for a way to explain these painful spasms I keep getting. The doctors didn't mention anything about them. I found one posting the mentioned them here. Has anyone else had them? When do they go away?
Also, I'm afraid to say it, but I haven't had a BM since the day prior to the surgery. I've been eating light, and taking colace, but nothing. Haven't even had the pressure, although I've had occasional bouts of gas. Is this good (gives me time to heal) or bad (rough, hard stool awaiting)?
Finally, like s76, I see a large ext hem poking out right where one was before. I called the surgeon asst. and she said the good doctor had taken out the two worst ones, and that this one was not inflamed and not the source of my pain. I'm kind of depressed, as I feel I've sacrificed a lot for no improvement.
Anyway, I'm bummed, and am dreading that first BM. Tell me I'm not alone!!!!--Jim
hello!!! i read some of your entries on this subject and i am just happy to find this forum. my husband underwent hemorrhoidectomy last 28 october and he was discharged today 31st from the hospital.. i can tell that he is in so much pain and i would like so much to be able to help him since i don't think his doctors are realistic about this operation. first of all, they take for granted the pain. and then, since he has 2 doctors (surgeons), both of them say different things... for example, the diet... one says light diet and the other says he can eat what he wants and the pain should go away in a matter of days! since his operation, he has not done any BM yet, and the scary part is that my husband does not realize what is coming to him since he does not seem to take any precaution on his food intake since one of his doctors told him that he can eat what ever he wants!
i know that the first BM is going to be hell and i have to be a part of that episode cos i am the one taking care of him. Everyone is so eager to know if he already did his first BM and maybe that is the reason why he is almost blocking it cos he could not understand why is it so important to happen.
i read about the part of doing the bm in the tub to help him with the pain. fortunately for us, we have a bidet so he can just as well do it there.
so if there is anyone out there who has had hemorrhoidectomy, could tell me when is this first bm suppose to take place? and from your experiences if you can give me some pointers on the diet, pain management etc...
would appreciate all kinds of help...
in the meantime, i will keep on reading your entries!
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
hi eklavu,
i had outpatient surgury having both internal and external removed. looking back now - the first 9 days are a complete blur. the pain was beyond imagination. i spent pretty much the entire first week in the tub because that was the only place my heine was not throbbing, i was popping darvocet like candy and it really did not stop my pain. i did not sleep for many days at all because of the pain.
the first bowel movements were indeed horrible and i screamed so loud i thought the neighbors would call the police. at first i was on 2 stool softeners a day - which my doctor upped to 4 (2 in the am 2 in the pm) i am on a fiber suppliment as well which i take with the stool softeners. it has been 3 weeks and 4 days and i am still not back to work and i still have pain after my bowel movements. in comparison, the pain is nothing to what it was during the first week or so. i am off the narcotics pretty much and plan on going back to work monday. i was told to eat what i want but to be sure to have 25 grams of fiber. i think depending on the sex/age it is between 25-35. i am really glad i had the surgury but the recovery for me has been tough - although not as tough as some of those i have read here. also, my doctor prescribed lydocaine - which numbs - i rub that on my heine still very often - something you may want to ask the doctor about.
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
hello badjingle,
thanks for your thoughts. reading it makes me realize how lucky my husband is.
he did his first bm last nov. 1 (but very little) without any pain during,
but after. he described it as if his heiny was forced open and left open even
after the movement. the next consecutive days he did it again and still no pain
during but after. he described them as these pins and needles kind of pain.
i have read stories of people having to go to do it in the tub but in his case,
he did not have to so i guess he skipped a very important part of the difficult BM process.
he does have lydocaine which is applied directly on the heiny to help him with the pain, plus he gets a daily injection of pain reliever which lasts him for more or less 12 hours which is probably the main reason why he is able to move without much pain.
the only problem now is that he does not really move as he should cos his pooh is so little and they are not really soft as it should be.
i wish i could ask you for a better brand of laxative or tool softener,
but since we live in italy, those midicines may not even be found here. he tried to increase his dosage on laxative but nothing really happens, except for gas!
regarding his diet, mostly, i give him light vegetable noodle soup though he loves to eat bread and pizza and i dont know if that actually affects his movement.
according to his doctor during his visit last nov 2, he should be in less pain already 5 days post op, in fact, he was rather surprised to hear that he was still in pain. he actually expected him to be up and about. having used the milligan and morgan surgical techique, the pain should be lesser and the healing process should be faster. would you know what sort of technique they used on you? i know that there is a few of them.
btw, my husband is 42 years old and he was a smoker. since he got operated, he stopped for fear that smoking might affect his healing. it could also be a factor why he can't move cos smoking is a part of his morning BM ritual but i do not want to encourage him to start again.
anyone else out there who was operated with a milligan & morgan technique?
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
hi eklavu,
i do not know the technique that was used on me - sorry. i will ask my doc next time i see her. your husband is lucky to get pain shots i only got darvocet pills. i think most stool softeners all act the same and if you go to your local drug store the pharmacist will be able to help you. i know mine are the store brand generic kind and have 100 mg of ducusate sodium. maybe your husband needs more fiber to bulk his stools up a bit. i believe a male of his age should be getting around 35 g of fiber. there is a thread on here that talks about metimucel and fiber and harry goes into a bit of detail regarding fiber. you can also find information on the web. overall, it sounds like your hubby is doing very well.
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
Is this type of surgery the norm for external surgery?
Have read most of the postings here and am waiting for an apt to see a colon/rectal surgeon and am quaking in my boots!
I have ext. hemms. and pain which has abated a little and bleeding as of this morning.
what is the least invasive quickest to recover from form of treatment??
have 3 small children and husband away until late dec....
wish me luck!
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
Nikita,
Everyone is different and recovery is also different but after surgery you have to make sure your stool is soft and regular. So you don't have any complications???
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
I really need help.
I had Hemorrhoidectomy on DEC8,
4 days later i didnt have any BM and the doctor fixed me up by enemas thing. He also told me to use Lactulose instead of SEnokot as Senokot doesnt work for me. Then 10 days later, the Lactulose thing worked nicely, i have around 4-6 BM per days. After 10 days, i feel almost no pain and i can sit or moving as normal but the Lactulose doesnt work. I have no BM for 2 days already even i take the Lactulose. I wonder what can i do to have BM, im scared of constipation. DId this happend to any of you ? Pl reply as im so confused and scared now.
Re: Hemorrhoidectomy blues!!! Will I ever recover from this surgery????
You need to take a water soluble fiber supplement like Metamucil at least twice daily and drink alot of water like the directions say. It is safe to take daily. Also, the stool softener should help.
Hello everyone, it's been months since I have posted and I am back. My surgery was almost 2 years ago now; summer of 2004. For the history read my previous posts. Like s76 I had the what looked like hems after the surgery, took almost 2 months before I could return to work (2 weeks my bum!) and have struggled with finding the medicine balance. It seems that everything that helps also hurts, such as pain meds that relieve the pain but cause constipation, and the RX creams which also cause constipation.
For months I felt better and dare I use the word "normal" and then it happened. I started bleeding again, painful bms, unable to sit, afraid to use the toliet and afraid not to. Last time I went to the Dr he said my condition is chronic. It will come and go for the rest of my life and will be completely dependent on my body.
Chronic is an interesting term that I am really just beginning to understand. I drink loads of water, in fact, I rarely drink anything else. I take benfiber everyday and some with meals, depending on the type. I have found benefiber to be the absolute best. I take a stool softener every morning. I take a sip of Milk of Magnesia MO (means with Mineral Oil) every night. Yes, I drink it right out of the bottle.
When I staffed with my DR what I was doing and if the amounts were enough or too much he said, you take what you need as you need it. Uh huh. How long? I asked. Chronic, he said, basically forever or until you don't need it anymore. On the bright side, non of the meds are contra indicated.
The worst part of all of this is answering the question, "What is it that you have/suffer from?" Constipation/hemm/fissures/FEAR and it's all chronic. Fortunately, the FMLA (family medical leave act) enabled me to document this with my employer and when I do have tearing/bleeding/intolerable pain, I can take time from work without fear of losing my job.
What's the point of my rambling. Partly y'all are the only people who understand. Partly, to share some meds tips with others, partly to share my experience of the healing process and partly to ask for some help with diet.
Has anyone found any links/books/recipies/diets for foods that are easy to digest, don't cause constipation? I found a bit of help on the Lupus site, but I'm not having much luck with diet. I feel have tried it all. Perhaps I just haven't tried it in the right combination?
I almost forgot. In an earlier post someone asked about medicines that can be prescribed and it reimnded me. My insurance company pharmacy plan no longer covers ibuprofin (I know, are they kidding?) but they do cover other drugs in the same class NSAID. The one I got was disomething sodium. THAT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE. My relapse after all of those months of "normal" pooping and bowel health was caused by that drug. Perhaps the sodium part should have beena tip, I don't know. All I know is I want to share with all of you, be sure to read the possible side effects, including the extremely rare ones (as constipation was on this drug) it's so not worth it to take a chance. I will tell you right now, the pharmacy can have my money, I'm sticking with ibuprofin from now on.
