Besides the price, is there a difference between Colace and Docusate Sodium?

I'm thinking about having a hemorridectomy, and have been reading posts from others who have had one done. many suggest using a number of colace to help get you through the aftermath of operation.

i have used the generic store brands, docusate sodium, for 5 years. i was told by a gastro p. a. to use only colace. this was concerning ibs. but after a few times of buying the colace, i decided to go with the MUCH CHEAPER generic version. i take 3 a day plus a dose of citricel every day . but i am concerned about post op, if the colace is actually better, naturally i would rather use it.

i would appreciate any opinions. i'm sure you can tell i'm pretty nervous about this whole thing . i'm seeing colo-rectal dr. tomorrow.

I'm just wondering if because of such a big price difference and of what the pa told me, is there truly a difference.

thanks in advance for any help given.

toni

Re: Besides the price, is there a difference between Colace and Docusate Sodium?

I don't know if this will help, but I've been taking generic peri-colace (colace stool softener plus stimulant laxative) and it seems to work just fine. I got a prescription for docusate sodium (generic colace) after I had surgery in January (hysterectomy) and it wasn't strong enough to prevent terrible constipation. After I had a fecal impaction (just awful), I've been taking generic peri-colace ever since. At first I had minor stomach cramps when I took it, but it's a small price to pay to avoid that impaction.
