I second the epidural. It is put in place before the surgery starts and is used for pain control. You still have general anesthesia but the epidural is kept is place while you are in the hospital for several days. The anesthesiologists monitor it and gradually decrease it. I really woke up pretty pain free. I then was switched to pain-killers but I really felt it got me through the worst of it.
As far as recovery time? I am not for sure what is meant by a paritial rectal resection. Are they resecting part of the sigmoid colon? That is what I had done. I was off work 6 weeks but I am more than twice as old as you are

Some people have gone back to work in several weeks. How long did the doctor say you'll be in the hospital? That sometimes helps figure how long recovery will take.
