Arrow Cronic Diarrhea, for over a year now,Please Help!

Yes a year and four months now, numerous Doctors, and Specialists.I've been poked, probed, and even had the Colonoscopy. At least 6 different medications, and I have even been to a Herbalist, and had my eyes read, and tried all herbal medications he suggested, still no relief.I eat when Iam comfortable with my surroundings because my reaction is almost immediate.I drink lots of liquids to try and avoid dehydration. My Doctor maintains that it is IBS,and perscribe accordingly, but nothing has worked,$$$$$.Iam in hope that someone reads this, and has an answer to this problem,so that I can get my old life back.

My husband's doctor (gastroenterologist) said it is safe to take Immodium every day if necessary. He also said to increase fiber in his diet. It helps to bulk up your bowel movements. Have you tried anything like that? Are you on any medication like Bentyl (dicyclomine) or other anti-spasmodic?

You probably need to settle your diet down, for one thing. My foodie friends and I swear by BRAT for diarrhea - Banana, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. i.e. rice will help solidify the stools because it absorbs liquid. Irritants such as spices, anything with sorbitol (a natural laxative), harsh foods even like iceberg lettuce (true) can be just too rough on the lower intestines, which are supposed to absorb liquid as they move the waste through. If they are irritated and inflamed, they can't do the job. You need to give your system a break and consume very easy to digest foods. Go off dairy, too. Drink camomile tea, eat babyfood if you have to (nobody is watching). Homemade chicken soup, not canned. The closer you can get to natural, the better (in other words, forget Lean Cuisines).

Re: Cronic Diarrhea, for over a year now,Please Help!

There were some good points made by earlier Posters. I, too have IBS and have daily diarrhea, but I've managed to cope, but am on disability from work. My wife just went through a similar situation as you describe, but for a much shorter period of time. Her situation also included vomiting. She was hospitalized four times in two months, and they finally solved the mystery. They did a colonoscopy, like you had done, but they did a biopsy as well. Did you have a biopsy done? Her's revealed Microscopic Colitis. It could not be seen by the naked eye. She is now on a regimen of Prednisone and turning around. In fact, she has begun the taper by5 mg a week.

You might ask your doctor about this possibility and see what he says. If you don't have a GI doc, get one, fast!

Re: Cronic Diarrhea, for over a year now,Please Help!

I was wondering if you had ever been tested for Celiac disease? It is an intolerance to gluten - found in wheat, rye and barley. I can definitely cause frequent trips to the bathroom!! When a Celiac eats anything with gluten, it can cause damage to the tips of the villi in the small intestine and so the intestines can't absorb food properly. Once on a gluten-free diet, the intestines are able to heal and things usually settle down quite a bit. The important thing to know is that if you go on a gluten-free diet before being tested, the test can be falsely negative. They usually do bloodwork first and then if it is positive, often will do a biopsy of the small intestine to check the villi damage. Not sure if this has anything to do with your situation, but figured I'd mention it just in case you had not been checked for it. I wish you the best of luck with things!!

Lisa

Have you had your thyroid checked? My DH had the symptoms you described for years & found out he had hyper- thyroid. Hope you're better soon.

My vote is Celiac too.

My mom is having the same issue and I too have suggested to her that she could be Celiac and/or have a thyroid condition.

Re: Cronic Diarrhea, for over a year now,Please Help!

I completely understand what you are going through. I was just in the ER last weekend because I was getting toilet fulls of blood with my stool. All they did was take a blood sample to make sure I didn't loose too much blood, and a short physical exam of my rectum. (he said he saw a small anal fissure), and then shoved something up there, and said, "well, it tested positive for blood." Really?!?!?!? THAT'S what all that red stuff in the toilet was?!? Then he says, well you aren't anemic, so go home, take 4 sitz baths a day (HELLO, some of us have to make a living), and follow up with my doctor.

Hey, thanks for all the help. Even my GI has never been very helpful. I mean what's the point in being a GI if you can help people with their digestive problems?!

Though, I would suggest being tested for Celiac.

You may need to ask your doctor about adding Magnesium to your dietary supplements. Myself and my 3 sisters have suffered with chronic diaherria all of our lives and my sister Kay recently went to a Holistic medicine doctor and he said to add magnesium to your diet and this may help. It would be worth a try, at least. Take care and Good Luck!

Re: Cronic Diarrhea, for over a year now,Please Help!

be careful with the magnesium though, too much can have a laxative effect.
I would go with the coeliacs/thyroid tests, I have hypothyroidism and also had chronic diarreah for 18 months. I had put it down to my bowel resection in 2004 though, I assumed that my bowel had become irritated by the surgery.

I have tried the gluten free diet which did help alot but colonosocpy, endoscopy and barium xrays showed nothing wrong.
the problems seems to of settled itself and i only get the occaisional bout now.
Have you tried pro and pre biotics? these seem to be very beneficial in settling the gut. Harry is the one to ask about this.
best wishes
daisy

Be aware of food allergies also. Some food allergies can cause diarrhea and will not get better until the causing factor is eliminated.
