Question Diarrhea for 2 months straight!!! Extreme weight loss!

Hi All.........
I really need some help here!!....My husband started having diarrhea exactly 2 months ago. He has it several times a day and has lost 35 pounds in the past 2 months! He started taking Imodium as directed, but when it didn't work, doubled the dose (against my advice!) and has seen our doctor who prescribed something that hasn't worked either. He has an appointment scheduled to see a GI doctor but that is still a few weeks away...The thing of it is, he has no pain with this. He just gets a churning feeling and has to run to the bathroom quickly. Our family doctor took a stool sample but sent a report stating that everything (whatever they were looking for) was within normal limits. At first he enjoyed watching the pounds just melt away, but is now beginning to look very thin and unhealthy. He can't keep this up! Also, he doesn't have near the appetite he used to have. He also has a lot of flatulence and is running everyone out of our house! What could this be? I would appreciate any ideas here. I have just began researching this but nothing I am coming up with, seems to totally fit. Any help would be so appreciated! Thanks so much.......LCW

Does it happen all the time or only when he eats certian foods? Maybe he has serious food allergies (and alot of them).
Are you able to see another doctor for a second opinion?

I have the same issue, I have been to many doctors with no avail. I'm feeling quite hopeless and I am hoping somebody has the answer.

He has it all the time.....Has not had a normal BM since this all began...It doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason.....I just don't know what could be causing it...He consults with a GI but that's weeks away.....Getting worried here! The only thing I know is that he has recently been diagnosed with Hep-C .....They just happened to find it while doing labs for life insurance.......Go figure! Then my children and I were tested and came back negative......Not long after.....the diarrhea began......

Boss Lady....How long has this been going on with you? Do you have it constantly like my hubby does? Has there been weight loss involved? So sorry to hear you're having the same problem! I just don't understand why they haven't been able to get to the bottom of it with you......What kinds of tests have they done?

Re: Diarrhea for 2 months straight!!! Extreme weight loss!

I've had endo, colonoscopy, breath tests, lactose-intol. test, mri and the barium test, all tests came back normal. I've recently changed my eating habits and actually stopped eating, meats and sugar! It seems I've done everything and still can't figure this out. Sorry I really can't help you out, I'm at the same place your husband is! (But, I thought that Hepatitis can actually cause the same symptoms your husband is experiencing? You might want to look into that.)

My mother-in-law has been having this problem for about two years now. You can imagine the weight loss involved. She has had THREE colonoscopy's and nothing has shown up. There have also been other tests but nothing. Otherwise she is fine. Good luck to you and keep us informed.

I presume he is going to be taking quite a lot of medication for being both HIV negative and having hep-C.

It could be severe side effects from the drugs he is taking, in which case I would suggest him asking for a different combination of drugs.

I know this sounds simple, but my husband swears by plain white rice with no butter or oil when you cook it. One cup rice, 2 cups water, 1 tsp. salt. Bring salted water to boil, put in rice, cover with tight lid, and cook it for 20 minutes. I've tried it and could not believe that it worked better than Imodium.

He's an oceanographer and used to go out to sea a lot. After one trip overseas, he brought home medicine called Lomotil. That stuff works lickity split.

Good luck and I pray you find your answer.

Sansy
