Worried about bowel movements, pain and occasional blood

Hi there,

I just discovered this site and wondered if anyone could help me. I'm a 19 year old girl and for about 4 or 5 years I've had trouble on and off with hemroids. It was never too bad though and they would come and go by themselves, howeve for about the past 6 months it's been getting more and more painful to make a bowel movement, and occasionally there is some blood on the toilet paper or down the toilet. I went to see two nurses about this and they both had a quick look and said that it was just a mild case of hemroids and just to change my diet. I did this, but it is getting a lot worse. For the past week or two I have been dreading having to make a bowel movement, and when I do I have to strain so hard to get it to come out. It feels like it's pushing against something, and then it finally breaks through it. After the first one, the rest are a bit easier. But once I come off the toilet, for about 6 or 7 hours after it I am in agony. I can't hardly sit down because it's so sore and I have to lie in the one position to try and ease it. I now dread when I have to go to the toilet. I tried to have a look myself, and have a feel and there seem to be loads of weird lumps and bumps. There is a long thing thing hanging down which looks a bit like a skin tag, then there are a few protruding lumps and one which is quite hard to touch and looks to be full of blood, but I'm not entirely sure. I don't know what to do because the pain is getting worse, not better, and the nurses who I saw (both female) told me that if it gets worse I should go see my doctor, but my doctor is a male and there re no female doctors in my surgery. I'm really embarrased to have a male doctor examine me. I am in so much pain though that I think I might have to. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Emma.

Re: Worried about bowel movements, pain and occasional blood

Please see your doctor, male or female. He/she may be able to prescribe something for you. Of course you will be embarrassed, but it is okay, we all feel that way when having to discuss and show such personal things, your doctor has seen it all before. Also, feel free to write down exactly what you want to say in case you are so nervous you forget all the details you want to share.

Re: Worried about bowel movements, pain and occasional blood

You have just described my situation for the past 12 weeks. I was originally diagnosed as having anal fissure, but on seeing the specialist again this week, he examined me and said I have a fistula, which is like a channel of infection that starts from the anal canal inside, and runs off to exit at the side of the anus on the outside. This can create what they call skin tags, and maybe a sentinel pile( its like a heammoroid, but not) I will have to have surgery to open and drain the fistula. Meanwhile, take pain killers which your doctor should prescribe,as he knows your health records.

I find it helpful, when I want to go to the toilet, to run a bowl of hot water, put it over the toilet bowl, and sit on that, and " go" in the water. However gross this may sound to others, you need not tell them, and this really does make the passing of the bowel motion easier. Have another clean bowl of hot water ready for afterwards, or run a bath, if time. But try it. The hot water cradles your painful bottom, and it does work.

If you do have this awful, painful, wearing condition, antibiotics or cream dont get prescribed, only surgery, but I do use certain creams anyway. It makes me feel better.

Please go see your doctor. In fact, they are never embarrassed, and some of them have had to go through the same thing. They are only human, and they all deal with these things in a matter of fact way.

Very good luck to you, I hope you can be pain free in the not too distant future.

Re: Worried about bowel movements, pain and occasional blood

Hi guys,

Thank you so much for your replies, it's good to know I'm not alone! I have a doctor's appointment booked for Friday morning, and as the appointment gets nearer I'm getting so nervous!!! I think it's just the whole examination thing that's freaking me out, because we only have male doctors at our sugery, and I've been told that for him to examine me he will have to have one of the female nurses present, so that means that two people will be looking. I'm just really embarrased, just because I use to always have a laugh and a joke with my doctor as I've known him for years, I would kind of preferred it to be a stranger, but that can't happen! Any advice on how to overcome these nerves???

Also thank you so much salappleby for all your advice! Once I've been to the toilet I now run a bath and sit in that for about 20 minutes, then take 2 Ibuprofen and the pain isn't as bad.

I'm just also worried incase it might be cancer. I am a total pessimist though, so although the chances are it's not, this is what's on my mind.

Anyway thanks again,

Emma.
