My Bowel is Blocked, What Can Be Done?

I normally have very active bowels. 3 or 4 solid movements a day. However, I have a problem with excessive gas building up in me. It seems that this gas can prevent me from having a bowel movement, and the first sign of trouble is lower back pain.

I've been able to get past these episodes by eating fiber cookies, lots of water, and soup for a few days. However, yesterday, I was hit with the back pain, and my home treatment did not work. Not one urge all day to evacuate my bowels.

I went to the doctor today, and they did a stomach xray. it showed my colon completely packed almost into my small intestine. She told me to go home, and take a whole bottle of magnesium citrate along with precolace. I took the Citrate an hour ago, and nothing. Not one urge. I'm really worried now about what kind of treatment lies ahead for me if this fails. I've searched on the net, and I can't find any treatment on how they can clear out your bowels. Can someone help? I'm very scared about this. I'm 33 and never faced this kind of problem.

What you need is a Probiotic. The one that I take has 35 Billion Microorganisms per two capsules called Probiotic 15-35 with NutraFlora. Look for something similar at your local health store. Your digestive systems is craving good bacteria. Probiotic is essential for gas, bloating, constipation, nervous stomach, poor digestion and diarrhea. Don't expect instant results. It took a few days before I had positive results. I've been taking it since last September and I now have a very happy digestive system.

Re: My Bowel is Blocked, What Can Be Done?

Well things are looking a bit better. I suffered yesterday with the worst headache of my life from not eating, and severe nasaea.

However, I started having movements, all liquid though. I was expecting big stools so I'm still uneasy that I am not cleaning myself out fully. Do these cleanse products turn your stools to complete liquids?

Re: My Bowel is Blocked, What Can Be Done?

2 things you may want to look into. One is the Colonix Kit. It is on Dr. Natura's website. I used this. All natural product. Does a complete and thorough cleansing. I can explain how this works if interested.

The other is, Bowel Obstruction, you may want to look this up on ***** site. This is what I have. We have some similar symptons except my stomach was inflamed. If your stomach is not inflamed, then may have something different. Could be just nerves. Did you do a catscan? This is how they caught mine this time around. You will see the causes and the cure for this on *****. But please consult or talk to your physican after reading the material. I could be off on this. I am just hoping this helps becuase I do know how scary this can be. Good Luck and I hope you keep us updated. Best of health to you.

Re: My Bowel is Blocked, What Can Be Done?

david,
Some Laxatives do cause loose to watery stools.

The best thing to do is to in take enough fiber daily to have normal stools.

This problem keeps coming up so I wrote a message on the Sticky Thread at the top of this page -- Information Archive --it is the last post about Normal BMs.
I suggest you read it.

Harry

Thanks for the info. This is day 5, and I'm still not feeling normal. I saw the doctor again on Tuesday night, and they did another xray. She said I was drastically cleaned out. All the stool matter was gone. It still showed some large gas bubbles, and my lower back continues to hurt.

I did talk to her about my fears of bowel obstruction, but she said it was unlikely since I have not been vomiting, or naseauted. After reading the WebMed article though, I'm not sure anymore. I am passing very little gas, and the stools continue to be just liquid. I've tried several anti-gas meds, and it is not relieving the pressure.

Hi David, have you eaten solid foods since you drank the Magnesium? I know that suff is very harsh on your system, especially the whole bottle when I believe the dosage is half the bottle. You should return to normal bowel movements soon after regular meals. If you can't eat or don't eat enough fiber in one day grab some supplements and take them daily to keep you regular. I am chronically constipated from massive amounts of pain meds I don't have a BM for weeks at a time It is HORRIBLE. If you ever get constipated that bad again they just came out with a prescription strentgh laxative that is over the counter now (that's what I was Prescribed) called Miralax It is a powder you put in a drink it's tasteless and works great.
Good Luck to you and feel better
Kelly

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for the reply! I did eat some solids yesterday. I ate a tuna fish sandwhich, jello and rice chex. Normally if I ever get constipated, I bulk up on the fiber such as fiber cookies, but it isnt working for me this time.

I really don't know what to do about this problem. At one end of the spectrum, I am simply suffering from severe gas that is keeping my bowels from being active. The Xrays do show clear gas bubbles in the colon, and it explains why my back hurts. Also, the back pain did come on Saturday morning, and I felt great after a large bowel movement. If I had not just eaten burgers and junk that night, I might be fine today. Another points in favoring of it just being gas are the fact that I have not vomited and I am passing gas in small quantities. The doctor said if I had a full on obstruction, I would not be passing anything.

On the other hand, I could be facing a partial bowel obstruction which is why most of the gas cant pass through. The alarming thing is I normally have strong urges to defecate, but nothing of the sort since Saturday.. Even with the Citrate, the urges were not intense.

I sat at home wondering if I should touch it out if my fear and self doubt, or just go back to the clinic and try to get some reassurance. I decided to go back, and I saw a different doctor this time.

He decided to put me on another bowel cleanse product and see if that makes me feel better. Funny thing is tonite, I started releasing more medium size gas and my stomach was churning like crazy. I started getting hope again, but then it all stopped up. I guess I'll try the bowel cleanse. I'll do anything at this point to end the fear and misery.

Re: My Bowel is Blocked, What Can Be Done?

Daivd,

I can relate to all that is happening to you. One thing I do have to say to you, it is not as worse as you think. Don't let your mind get the best of you. I know I almost did. I went to the doctor's the other day and I looked like a deer looking at head lights. She said I was fine. Either I will pass normally or I will be back in the hospital and I will need minor surgery, just to push the blockage. Yours is lighter then mine so don't even think about that. You have passed stool. You wil be fine, but you may want to evalute somethings in your life. Are you getting plenty rest? What is heavily stressing you in life? Are you following a proper diet? Are you drinking plenyt of liquids? Especially water.

I wasn't and it almost cost me. Death in the family and stress from work did heavy damage to my stomach. Hardly any rest and good amount of alcohol daily to contribute to this problem I now go to bed early. Am resting all the time. On a proper diet. Poweder, cookie and liquid fibers. No drinking at all. And drinking a gallon of water a day. It is helping. Am taking laxatives to help the process ( Oxy Cleanse ).

Don't put any adding stress to your situation. I understand the fear ,especially of not knowing. It is a very uncomfortable life style right now. But, I do less stressing now then before and it seems to help. Hope all is well and I will keep looking at your posts. Hope to hear some great news soon for you!

Hi All,

I'm newhere and I'd like to contribute as well as learn as much as possible about your personal experiences with IBS or related.

I'm a T4 paraplegic and because of a bowel blockage and excruciating pain, I had a colostomy performed. However, that only alleviated part of the problem.

I still suffered from all the other symptoms. Therefore it was a paint by numbers -- the process of elimination. I began with a popular but expensive colon cleanse.

That regulated me. Fimed things up and eliminated most of the problems. I also have a G feeding tube and a tracheotomy so I can't drink or I end up with pneumonia.

Well, from 1 cup of liquid a day, I'm now up to 2 liters a day +++ and 25-30 grams of high fiber.

It's a start. Most symptoms are gone. But much yet to do. Getting a regulated healthy diet, exercise, proper supplements like exynes, probiotics, a few more herbs---- but NEVER take laxatives. They'll ruin your colon plus.

Please everyone, the docs are greatat surgery and the real heavy stuff like cancer and a multitude of rare diseases, but when it comes to IBS, most docs, internists, dieticians, and nutritionists are totally ignorant.

In university or med school they are never taught about IBS -- it's prevention or cure. As proof, what idiot will ever recommend laxatives? Do you have any idea what laxatives do to the colon?

It decays it. Ask any medical examiner about colon conditions on any autopsy they ever performed. Every case without exception showed colons that looked worse than the illustrations we were raised with on lungs from heavy duty smokers.

And it's all due to diet, nutrition, and medications. On my site I have some graphic videos you should see.

No, I'm not selling anything. In fact it's not officially launched yet. But to promote it I'll be putting about 20 videos on just IBS on You Tube and other video sites.

I'm the T4 paraplegic who posted above. I've suffered with IBS for over 20 years and I wish I knew then what Iknow now. Thanks to 10 years of research.

The keys to cure are high fiber (20-30 grams) a day, 2 liters of water, a cup of mild senna tea at bedtime, at least 12,000,000 per cap Probiotics once or twice a day, and Ezynes are most important.

As far as diet, stay off the fries and junk food. It's like going out on the town getting drunk. You always regret it in the morning. If you don't care about your health and well being, QUIT MOANING!

Sorry. But IBS is no joking matter. It takes discipline and lifestyle changes. Exercise is great too. It get the heart and blood circulating. Read about how your digestive system works.

Learn and act. Sure, forums and blogs are great for support, but when I hear of pharmaceutical cures, I get really ticked off. Many may provide certain relief. But there's ALWAYS a price to pay. SIDE EFFECTS. Why risk with your life?

Believe me. There are natural and herbal remedies for most symptoms. I don't pretend to know it all. I'm no doctor. And I do realize some cases have stretched the envelope where intrusive surgery is needed.

But don't trust any doctor cause he's a doc. Find a specialist. Go to the Mayo Clinic on the net. Research. I guarantee in no time you'll know more about IBS than most docs.

Thanks for reading. I'm new here and really don't want to intrude. If I've offended anyone, my heartfelt apologies. But remember, a syndrome is labeled such because there is no other term for a group of symptons under one genre.

Hope I've been a little helpful at least.
