Oatmeal: Does it make diarrhea worse or better?

Upon my Mom's insistence, I am going to have some oatmeal.

Will it make my diarrhea worse or better?

I thought it would make my D worse, but she says that the fiber in it will bulk up my stools.

Please advise.

A.

Hi Alesis. I've always heard (and used) the BART diet when needing to solidify things.

B= Banannas
A= Applesauce
R= Rice
T= Toast

Hope this helps!

brat diet is fine,oatmeal,flaxmeal or psyllium will work to ,make sure you
drink a lot of water and go slow it takes a while to build up to fiber.

Re: Oatmeal: Does it make diarrhea worse or better?

Thank you for your replies, everyone. I am going to continue with the oatmeal and see how it makes me feel...I am also going to try the applesauce, rice and continue the toast part of the BRAT diet...(don't care for bananas).

Someone mentioned to me about rice cereal...don't remember if it was on this board or another one...should I be eating puffed rice, or more like baby food rice cereal?

Thanks a bunch,

A.

Re: Oatmeal: Does it make diarrhea worse or better?

To bulk up your diet-- you need soluble fiber.
That is the type that absorbs fluids -- like psyllium in Metamucil, Citrucel that contains methyl cellulose, Benefiber that contains guar gum and Inulin that is chicory root in Fiber Choice.

The inner part of all grains including oats is soluble but the outer part is like bran that isin many cereals and will act like an insoluble fiber and causes faster BMs.

There is oat bran and oat bran flakes that act more to make your stool looser.

Most people that eat oatmeal have a looser stool but it is really determined by the type of the rest of your fiber intake--- a conbination of both insoulble and soluble fiber is needed ---. Most people don't intake enough soluble fiber.
Your stool should be about a quarter in diameter and tubular shaped!

Hello Harry:

Thank you for your reply. Do I have to take all four of those supplements, or can I take just one to bulk my stools up along with the insoluble fibre in my diet?

Also: Are there foods I can eat that contain soluble fibre?

Thanks a bunch,

A.

Re: Oatmeal: Does it make diarrhea worse or better?

All you have to do is just take 1 type of soluble fibre --- I was just letting you know what is available.

I like and use psyllium-- the Equate brand from Wal Mart -- the orange flavored sugarfree powdered type that I mix with water.

There is a post about Normal BMs in the Information Archive at the top of this page--- post #10-- it mentions the soluble foods.
