My colonscopy experience - Bowel Disorders Message Board

After being on these boards for about a year with different issues, mostly related to IBS and bowel, bleeding, fissures, hemorrhoids I finally gave in and had my colonosocpy today. As usual, I agree with everyone that the prep was the worst. Not so much because of any cramping, but because I hate that feeling coming out! After a year of thinking I Had colon cancer, they found absolutely nothing except for the hemorrhoids. I an completely relieved. I was given an I.V. to make me sleep and I don't remember anything until I woke up in recovery. As so many other people on this board have said, if you have questions or concerns, just get the colonoscopy done. It was a breeze since I slept through it and you just need to endure about 24 hours irritation from the prep itself. Now I'm going to go take a nap!

I am glad that you posted that. I am on the fence as to weather to have this done. I have hemorrhoids and they bleed and I am only 44 with no family history of colon anything. My Dr.s say it is okay to wait until December (insurance plan changes), but everytime my hemorrhoids act up and bleed, I think I might have colon cancer. I am going through just such an episode right now, and I am in somewhat of a panic as to what to do. This has been going on since mid April....and they did go away with treatment for 3 months, but now they are back and bigger than ever. I would appreciate any insight you could give as to what you went through before making this decision, and what finally made you say enough is enough.

LIke I said, I had a fissure and hemorrhoids and my "enough is enough" point came when I realized it was consuming my life and all my thoughts. I couldn't concentrate on anything or even enjoy myself thinking constantly that I had cancer. I finally woke up one day a couple weeks ago and said "this is it. I'm going to call and make the appointment and find out so I can move on with my life." I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders and know that anything that comes out of that end, no matter how odd or weird, is normal for me since I know there is absolutely nothing in there. If you are on the fence in deciding, I would say just do it. It's worth the peace of mind and like I said, I slept through the whole thing and don't remember any of it. Good Luck.
