Question blood/stool-need advice

Let me begin by saying that in November I became ill suddenly in the middle of the night. After several days of constantly going to the bathroom with diarrhia and throwing up continuously I went to urgent care where I was diagnosed has having diverticulitis. The dr. put me on two antibiotics and I eventually felt better but some things have not been the same. My bum always feels painful plus I always see streaks of blood on my stools and blood in the toilet bowl. I just figured that I got hemmorhoids from all the diarrhia and that they would eventually go away. Now I am getting frightened because of the blood. Plus I have tried hemmorhoid creams and other creams and nothing helps at all. I know I should go to see a dr. and this is where your advice would be helpful. I know this sounds stupid but what kind of doctor should I go to and how do you prepare for an appointment for something like this?!!!!!! Thanks for your advice!!!!

What Dr. diagnosed you with diverticulitis? Was he a gastroenterologist? Did they give you a diet to follow to help allay flareups? I would see a gastro. They are the specialists in this area.

Re: blood/stool-need advice

Thanks. No it was not a gastro dr. that diagnosed me but the dr. that diagnosed me did say that because of my symptoms it was pretty safe to say that it was diverticulitis. Besides vomiting and diarrhia I also had a terrible pain in my left side which he said is also a symptom of diverticulitis. Anyway, thanks for the heads up on what kind of dr. to see. I will have to find a gastro dr. in my area. Could you give me a little info on what kind of exam they do and how to prepare for it? Thanks.

Re: blood/stool-need advice

Hi Need,

They'll probably do a colonoscopy. The Dr. will tell you for sure and how to prep for that. It's a little yucky, but not that bad. It's important that you talk with the gastro first and see what needs to be done. Be sure to ask a lot of questions on what, how, and why?
