Anyone know what the pain med is they give you b/4 the procedure? I was told you get Versed & a pain med because when they put air in the colon it is painful? Was you nauseous when you woke up? Thanks.
I was given Valium and Demerol. I have had several colonoscopies and have been fine after waking. If the procedure is done in a doctor's suite, you sometimes are not truly put to sleep. Usually because your doctor is the only MD there. The sedation is sometimes called Twi-light sedation.
Dear Sammi2,
I had a colonoscopy about three years ago. I cannot remember the medicine they gave me but i was supposed to be asleep. I think they were amazed that i was still a little lucive. It was not painfull at all. I couple of times i looked up at the screen the doctor was looking at it was kind of interesting to see. He took a couple of biopsies(sp) sorry rushing. One came back positive for proctitiis. I was not in pain at all. I had a lot of gas afterwood that was a little embarasing. I was not nausious.

I've had several colonoscopies. The first time they gave me Demerol and I remember the whole thing and it was as undignified and uncomfortable as you might imagine.
The second two times I told the staff about my experience with Demerol and they give me something stronger. All I know is, I start counting down from 10 and wake up and it's done, and no nausea afterward. What works probably depends on your own body chemistry.
