| Re: Barium enema & IBS???
You're meaning irritable bowel syndrome and not inflammatory bowel disease, right?
Personally, I don't think the barium enema diagnoses anything. It might see something, but usually other tests are needed for confirmation. I had a good 15 inches of severely inflamed rectum/sigmoid from ulcerative colitis and it showed NOTHING!
I personally think it's a wasteful test. Get a colonoscopy....better served by having a direct visual, plus the doctor can take biopsies.
Of course, this is based on my experience.....many don't think the barium enema test shows anything either. The upper barium swallow seems to be a different story regarding ulcers...I had that as well...was no bit deal.
The barium enema test is .... well....more degrading than a colonoscopy. Maybe it was the nasty woman and man I had doing my test. I suggested they might want to trade places..lol!
