I've always been constipated. BM every three to five days. About 3 years ago I started having these horrible "attacks". They happen usually after 4 or more days of not having a BM and sometimes not even being able to pass gas. They start with terrible cramping and a bloated totally discomfortable feeling and with in 15 20 minutes i'm running to the bathroom. The cramping gets even more excrutiating and nausea sets in. The cramping comes in waves all over my abdomen and then i start having a BM. I can't explain how excrutiating the cramps are, i'm in tears. I get really clammy and hot, break out in a cold sweat. My colon and rectum get spastic and if i try to push the pain gets even worse and i vomit uncontrolably. These attacks last about 30-45 minutes and produce a very large bm. the stool is normally soft and pretty thin. after wards i am drained completly and HAVE to rest for at least an hour. I've been having them more frequently as time goes by. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? I have no insurance so am afraid to go to a doctor with out being able to ask for specific tests to help cut down on guesswork testing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks!

Hi Ray Ray..Yes for a number of yrs I have had exactly what you described..it seems that way anyway. It was called Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I used to get pains and spasms so bad..I felt like I was in labour..having given birth before..I felt the pains were that severe. I do remember the nausea..and the sweating..and faint feeling and having to lie down..yup..seems like what you may have. However..please try metamucil..that is what the bowel specialist told me to start..about 1/4 of tsp to start with ...to see how I would react..then slowly build up to where your bowels are moving how they should be. Then at the same time..one step at a time..have a good diet..fruit..vegies..low fat foods...change over the diet slowly as well...so your bowel gets used to it. then please...please drink lots of water during the day...and if able to go for walks..or be mobile as much as you can as it helps the bowel..start slowly in that too..if you don't aleady. I can tell you my sisters and I all have had the same thing..called irritable bowel syndrome...and we all have had our cramps..diarhea..constipation..or whatever almost elliminated...truly..so take the first steps ...metamucil..or whatever pharmacist recommends..and change in diet..if not already having a good diet..and water..and start being active..then..if there are no changes in a few months..then do go see a Dr..If you feel like you have blood in stool...then you should go see family Dr..to rule out anything more seriious..however I have had blood in my stool..but I also have diverticulosis...they found that when I had a colonoscopy...that can be painful if those little pouches that have formed in my bowel get stuck with seeds...food etc..
I hope I have shared with you some things to help you sort out your bowel problem...and start you on a healthy lifestyle..IF...you have not already done that. Your message brought back some memories...best to you..Brenda57..ps..let me know what happens in a few weeks...till then...
I have the SAME thing. I wake up and it just feels like the gas is moving in my intestines back and forth and back and forth and it is so incredibly painful. This usually lasts for the same amount of time yours does (15-20 minutes) and once I start having a movement it is diarreha and the cramps are still excrutiating. I usually have another episode of the gas moving around for another 5 minutes or so and I have the same kind of movement all over again. Usually after the second one the cramps lessen and I can at least go to sleep for a while. But these only happen in the middle of the night for me and I have yet to find out why they happen. And they're terrible. Also, not to mention, quite embarassing at a friend's house.
thank you for the replies, its great knowing i'm not the only one experiencing this. i've actually given birth before and your right brenda57, its like labour pains! I'm pregnant again now and have been eating a very healthy diet for over three months now, lots of fresh fruit and veggies no coffee ect.. I've also tried metamucil tablets but got no relief. I work out three times a week and live a pretty healthy lifestyle so i don't know what else i can do. I'm really worried my pregnancy is going to aggravate what ever i have more because of how squished everything gets the bigger the baby gets. any more advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks
Hi, I just wanted to share my experiences with you as well. When I was a teenager I would have these very same episodes you have described sometimes it would be to the point were I almost pass out and my pajamas were soaked with sweat, then when i hit my late 20s I was hospitalized with severe abd pain had an appendectomy but I was still in terrible pain after 2weeks in the hospital they did an exploratory and found Crohns disease in my small intestines. I was sent to a GI specialist and placed on meds and steroids. Symptoms would come and go then in 2000 I was hospitalized again for severe pain, vomitting and a bowel obstruction. I ended up on the OR table again and had a small bowel resection. They removed about 8 inches of small bowel that was described as looking like "swiss cheese" full of holes and ulcerations. I guess what I am getting at is you need to go to a Gastroenterologist and find out what is really going on. Don't just assume that is "irritable bowel." Needless to say I have been in remission for 7 years now. I have had some ups and downs along the way such as multiple obstructions related to scar tissue at the site of the resection but the good news is I have not been hospitalized in 3 1/2 years for bowel obstructions! But really I just want to drive home to you that you really need to see a specialist and get some answers so you can deal with the problem properly and hopefully get some relief! Good Luck to you.
