Probs with bowel movements after surgery

Hi there - I've been reading up on this site for a few weeks now and wonder if anyone can help.

My husband (age 55) had major bowel resection with open surgery on Jan 7th (all of sigmoid colon and part of rectum removed). In the beginning the recovery seemed pretty slow, but now he's coming along in leaps and bounds.

However, he constantly feels like he needs to go to the toilet - sometimes 3-4 times an hour. He cant usually pass stools - only every 1-2 days, but passes clear mucus. He's been given Loperamide to slow the system down, which kinda works, but doesnt seem to be totally reliable.

I've tried looking online to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this, do you know what's causing it and what can be done to stop it? He's been signed off for another 2 weeks but it rather dreading going back to work when he doesnt know when he has to go and whether it'll be pee, poo, wind or mucus.

Any suggestions gratefully received. thanks

Re: Probs with bowel movements after surgery

Using a water soluble fibre supplement like Metamucil/ psyllium husk will bulk up his stool, slow it down and make him more regular. Make sure to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.

I had 2 1/2 feet of my colon removed on 3/4/2002 --- my sigmoid colon plus some because of chronic diverticular bleeding. I have been using this type fibre for 23 years.

I wish your husband well---Harry

Re: Probs with bowel movements after surgery

Many thanks, Harry. I'll certainly give it a go. (His too was because of diverticular bleeding).
