when to see dr., possible diverticulitis attack?

My 40 year old husband has been hospitalized 3 times in the past 2 years for diverticulitis attacks and is scheduled for a bowel resection this June. A colonoscopy revealed that he has numerous large diverticuli throughout his sigmoid and transverse colon. Over the weekend, he complained that he is feeling mild pressure in the usual area where he feels pain during diverticulitis attacks. He said the pain was only about a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, and his temperature is normal. We are not sure whether he should wait and see if the pain increases a bit or if he should go in right away. When do you usually call or see the doctor for diverticulitis? Thanks!

Don't mess around with this. Its better to be safe than sorry. If he has a full blown attack he probably won't be able to have his scheduled surgery in June. Or, if you wait too long he may have to have an emergency resection, which you definitely don't want. I'd call if he's still having symptoms tomorrow. Let the doctors decide what to do. Good luck, and please post back and let us know how your husband is doing.

My husband says he feels fine, better than yesterday, so he hasn't called the doctor. Hope it was all nothing. Thanks for responding!
