Fear of Thrombosed Hemmorhoid - Bowel Disorders Message Board

Hi all,

This is my first post--sorry in advance that it's going to be long.

I had an excruciatingly painful thrombosed hemmorhoid about 6 weeks ago shortly after the birth of my second child (had bad c-section related constipation). Ended up in the ER but the doc wouldn't remove it b/c it was 48 hours old. Few days later I went to a family doc b/c it had ruptured and was oozing dried blood, and he pulled out most of the dried clot, which helped with the pain a lot.

Since then my constipation has improved but is not gone despite taking metamucil, Colace, drinking a ton of water and eating fruits/veggies, and I exercise a lot. I do still have a hemmorhoid that comes out with most BMs. I can easily push it back in and it causes no pain.

However, I just had a rather large, but not horribly hard BM and saw a bit of blood on the tissue, just like I used to before the thrombosis, and now I'm freaked out that the hemmorhoid I have will thrombose.

So... (finally!) here's my question. I have proctosol and anusol that the doc gave me before. Is there any benefit in using these preventatively? That is, if I have scratched the hemmorhoid can using these prevent a painful thrombosis? Any other suggestions?

I have had hemorhoid problems since having children too. Make sure you are not using any medicines that have hydrocortisone in them. Hydrocortisone thins the skin and causes other rectal problems like fissures. Also, do not strain with a bowel movement. Keep your stools soft and moving. When you body gives you the sign it needs to go, don't delay as this causes the stool to harden.

Keep up the fiber in your diet from foods. I found that taking a fiber supplement like Metamucil only made me have multiple BMs a day. The Colace also didn't work well for me. If you are really worried about developing worse hemorrhoids add Milk of Magnesia before bedtime. The 500mg capsules work great. Also, if you don't want to take Milk of mag and you want something more natural then drink an 8-10 ounce glass of prune juice before bed. It tastes gross but really helps keep things soft and moving. Or if you are really worried about hemorrhoids do both the MOM and the prune juice.

Try to keep you bowel movement soft with a proper diet. Acid forming foods are causing not only constipation, but also weak veins, and weak veins are more prone to develop hemorrhoids. Alkaline forming foods are helping with digestion.

A healthy diet is based on 80% alkaline foods and only 20% acid forming foods. Coffee, black tea and mainly soda are all high acid forming, while water (especially with a good pH of 7.5+) and green tea are alkaline. All medications are acid forming! Therefor, whenever it is possible go for a natural variation. As for your hemorrhoid try Rue Care Oil.

With 2 kids giving up coffee may be a pipe dream, but I can try to cut down. I haven't tried the prune juice or Milk of Magnesia--but will give them both a shot. Though they don't sound too appetizing

, but anything's worth it to avoid another thrombosis!
