Unhappy anal pressure/numbness

I have this symptom of pressure/numbness with the rectum. It started a few months ago after i had a bout with constipation due to the atkins diet i was on. A week or so after my constipation i noticed this symptom. It seemed as if i had stool stuck just at the anus. Even when my bowels returned to normal or i had diarreah it seemed as though it was still something there. Before all this started i had noticed another symptom about a month prior. It may have absolutely nothing to do with my current problem though. I had an intermittent vibration in the pelvic area, which was very very weird. It felt as though the cell phone was on vibrate and going off every three seconds. I could make the symptom increase when i would put my head down toward my chest. There was tension at the base of my neck and a strong tingle would run down my back to my rectum when i would hold my head down. This symptom eventually lightened up to the point that i did not notice it for a while. However, it is still around just not often.

But back to the rectal pressure/numbness. I've had a colonoscopy but nothing was found. My dr stated if the rectal symptom continues he wants me to see a dr that specializes with the rectal muscle. I'm still waiting for that appointment. Have anyone had this happen to them?

I also recently had my uterus removed due to fibroids that were very large. I though it was the reason for my problem. I thought it was putting pressure on everything in that area and once removed this rectal pressure/numbness would go away but it did not. It got lighter but is still a problem and very very annoying!

Could this be a nerve problem located in my back since there is a paralysis like symptom with the rectum? I noticed that i feel the pressure more when i lay down in the evenings after i've been working. Before i got the uterus out i use to feel it the most when lying on my back or my side. If i lay on my stomach it would go away sooner. However, it starts all over again the next day usually after i've had a full day at work or out and about.

Unhappy Re: anal pressure/numbness

Wow...your post was very clear and accurate. I was so happy to even hear that there was another human on this planet with this issue. I have recently been experiencing the same numbness in the rectal area. It actually extends slightly to the outer part of my bottom as well and it is really really numb. I also had a long bout with constipation, actually most of my life. But in particular just a few months ago (October). The bout passed but about two months later I started to feel like I had toilet paper stuck inside inbetween the top of my rectum area.. As wild as that sounds it is what it felt like. I checked, obviously did not, and blew it off for a few weeks.
Then the numbness increased to the inside bone of my bottom. I went to the doctor and he wanted me to have a colonoscopy but I was sure it was a back/neck nerve deal because I had also taken a fall in late November and landed on my tail bone. Anyway, (sorry to ramble) I went to the chiropractor just yesterday and he took full spine x-rays and I go back Monday for the results. He said my spine was "of concern". But said he thought he would be able to help me. I told him all about the numbness and he said he would discuss it more after seeing the results of the X-rays.
I have a family member who has told me it is most likely a disc/nerve issue. He is an MRI Doc. so I hope he is right. But I am frightened by all of this and I wanted to look it up. I did and when I read your story I really wanted to connect and see what happened at your appointment with that doctor you were going to see about the muscle in the rectum area. Did you go yet?

I am an elderly woman, not tooo elderly but a bit past 60 and in overall very good health. My numbness is way less intense in the morning. But if I even touch the rectal area it IMMEDIATELY gets much worse. Very annoying as you know. So...what did you find out? I would like to communicate with you. Are you able to do so? I am not sure how this site works. Best of luck and thank you for posting your situation. I hope you will respond.

Re: anal pressure/numbness

I am glad to hear other people have been experiencing this. Actually relieved. I have been embarrassed about this for a month now. For almost two weeks I had a bout of constipation, I just couldn't go. After the two weeks, I came down with a really bad Migraine, every time I moved my chin towards my chest (looked down) A sharp pain would go all the way down my back and even into my legs. When I couldn't take it anymore my mom took me to the hospital, when I told the doctors I hadn't had a bowel movement in so long, they didn't seem concerned. They just wanted to rule out reasons for my migraine. They decided not to do a lumbar puncture, to check for spinal meningitis, due tot he fact I responded to the IV medication they were giving me. When I got home I took three stool softeners, and finally I was able to go, but for some reason it always feels like there is pressure there, even when i don't have to go. And i noticed when I did go, when I wiped I had a numb feeling around the anus and even up further towards my back and out towards the bottom. It is still like that. Not quite sure if its getting worse or not because I really can't feel anything. All i know is that it's not going away, And with the lack of health insurance I don't think I will be able to afford to figure it out. If anyone has any answers for me let me know. I am getting scared. What if it is something serious?

Re: anal pressure/numbness

Have had anal pressure for about 3 weeks now. Think it may be Hemmeroids but have made the decision to see my primary physician when I get back from vacation that has been planned for 2 months. I fell about 5 months ago. Have been going to a Chiropractor for lower back and tailbone pain. He has brought me some relief, If I stand I feel no anal pressure. It is really confusing but glad to know I am not alone in the anal pressure.

Wink Re: anal pressure/numbness

Louboo,
I just found your comments via an e mail from this web site. I always wondered if anyone ever even loked at it. Well I did tonight and I want to tellyou some good news about what SOUNDS like a similar situation you have that I also have. I went through MRI's OB Doctors, Intern Specialists-Colon Drs. and finally Chiropractiors and Physical Therapists to try to figure out why my rectum area and the outside of it was numb. I was also numb down the center ONLY of the middle of the back of my knee to the lower part of my bottom. Right at the panty line. It was so strange. It seemed like it was much worse if I had lifted things during the day that were too heavy for me and yet I am very strong. This started for me in November of 09 and has gone on for almost a year. It is finally getting a little bettr on its own. I believe it is sciatica. I had many people tellme that, but the Doctors all came up with no answers at all. In fact they told me that if it was not really bothering me , to let it go and see what happens. How comforting. I have a nephew who is a sports therapist and he has taught me about the sciatica and all the signs and symptoms of that. It is a long term issue. I have come to believe him, as I have done small amounts of his suggestions and it is much better. The feeling inside the anal area is returned, but the numbness is still inside the leg right by the anal area but getting better. i UNDERSTAND IT MAY TAKE A LONG TIME TO GET OVER BECAUSE i AM SO ACTIVE AND IT IS A HARD AREA TO CURE.Anyway, hope this helps. Good Luck. I know it is frighteneing, so I hope you figure out what is wrong. Look up the information I have passd on.
