Hi, I also had one. Actually I had one that healed and then I got one in the 6 O"clock position and it wouldn't heal. I had that one for about a year and finally had to have surgery. The fissure can bleed, cause anal sphincter spasms which hurt like heck, there can also be swelling and itching. I found sitz baths help, keeping the area clean and dry also helps. There are some ointments out there nitro, or nifedipine ointment or diltiazem cream but your doctor has to prescribe them and you need a compounding pharmacy to fill them. They help some but for a lot of patients surgery is required. Do you have any skin tags from your fissure. Chronic fissures usually do. They can swell and be uncomfortable too. I had my surgery last Oct. My fissure healed but I still have some discomfort in the area. These things can be a nightmare. I hope you find some relief. Be persistant, if you don't feel better go back to the doctor.
I have one that bothers me once or twice a year. It last for a few weeks and then heals up for months and then gets re opened. Ugh! I used Tucks medicated pads, do sitz bathes with Epson salts, used Hemm creams and hope and pray I never have to have surgery. My mom had this surgery years ago.
You will be ok. Just really baby yourself and keep your stools fairly soft. But avoid diarrhea, I get problems with that and it re opens the cut.
