What do I have? stool that is coming out in pieces, when I have a high fiber diet?

I am 43 years old and for the last year I have been having small pieces of stool along with normal size stool. Prior to this last years I never had small pieces of stool. My diet has not changed and I have always eaten lots of fibrous food, drank lots of water, and do not smoke/drink (not even caffeine). I also have always exercised. The problem that this small stool is creating is that it does not want to come out (have to do warm water enemas to get out, otherwise suffer with chronic gas). I have sphincter muscle deficiency due to a vaginal birth 10 years ago that should have been c-section (9lb 11 oz). I had a episiotomy repair and sphincter repair about 6 months after the birth. The sphincter repair is old now (10 years) and is no longer good (probably can't be fixed either since at the time of the repair I was told that it was so thinned out by the delivery that there was virtually almost nothing that could be done with it). So basically I don't have any muscle to push out this small stool. My question is what could be cause this stool when I eat a VERY high fiber diet and nothing diet wise or exercise wise has changed?

Re: What do I have stool that is coming out in pieces, when I have a high fiber diet?

I too suffer from constipation and small, hard pieces are often a part of it.
I think it has more to do with lubrication than fiber intake. We all have natural lubrication in our bowels & anus but, with age or disease ect. the passage way can become dry.
Also, you may want to look into an osmotic(sp?) solution. It's not a laxative in the traditional sense. In the USA there is a product called MIRALAX & in Canada it's known by it's proper name of Polyethylene Glycol 3350( PEG for short). Some pharmacies keep it behind the counter so you may have to ask.It draws water into your feces & holds it there making the evacution process sooo much easier & complete, intact feces.
There are all kinds of natural way to increase your bodies natural lubrication too just do a quick search online.
I hope this helps at least alittle.

Unhappy Re: What do I have stool that is coming out in pieces, when I have a high fiber diet?

Thanks for the post. Unfortunately, I tried Mirlax, it makes the stool like paste and since I virtually have no sphincter muscle left, it can't be pushed out. If I did get any out, there would still remain soft small pieces in my rectum.

Thanks,

Lightbulb Re: What do I have stool that is coming out in pieces, when I have a high fiber diet?

Well if that's the case then I have 1 sure fire guaranteed way to get it out... It's called sodium phosphate
I found out about it when I had my last colonoscopy. It is used to COMPLETELY void your bowels.

I've used it many times & it works great. It litterally turns everything in your bowels to liquid. That being said, stay home that day.lol I've stood up before after takoing this & had to rush to the bathroom.

This takes away the need for your sphincter & uses gravity instead. I've gone over 2 months before without going with hospitalization & the works, nothing worked but, this!

It was recently removed from shelved because constant use in elderly patients(69+) has shown some kidney development of kidney problems. However, I 've spoken to my family MD as well as my GI specialist & they both said it was safe to use on a weekly/bi-weekly basis.

It's kept behind the counter but some drug stores may not have it on stock in which case your pharmacist could order it in for you.
And the best part of this is the $$$ it runs about 5$ a bottle/dose(canadian)
I hope this helped at least a little.
