Left abdominal pain and rectal bleeding.

Since last Friday I have been experiencing left abdominal stabbing & cramping pain from right below my ribs to adjacent to my belly button. It hurts the worst in the morning and comes with nausea. I also am experiencing fatigue and lightheadedness along with painful bowel movements and rectal bleeding. It hurts when I eat and I feel full really quickly. Then an hour later I'm starving and feel like I haven't eaten in weeks. It is definitely not gastritis or reflux as I've had that before. I got referred to a gastroenterologist with an appt this tues. and was told I'll need a colonoscopy. I feel better when I am standing up or laying down and is tender to the touch.

I've been trying to do research on the web to figure out what this could be and the only thing it kind of matches is diverticulitis. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Mel

Re: Left abdominal pain and rectal bleeding.

Constipation. Causes pain in that area, nausea and hard stools can tear on the way out and cause bleeding. While waiting on your GI appt you can try some fiber supplements (slowly add) and miralax, which softens the stool but isn't a laxative so it won't cause bad cramping. Start that slow also because it can cause more nausea if you over do it.

Re: Left abdominal pain and rectal bleeding.

I forgot to add my daily intake of fiber is normally between 23-30 grams, I take fiber supplements and stool softeners. I don't have hard stools and have regular BM's.

Re: Left abdominal pain and rectal bleeding.

When I see left abdominal pain, the first thing I think of is diverticulosis/diverticulitis. Before mine was diagnosed, for many years I had eaten more fiber than average (15-20 grams) and was regular at least once a day, but later found out there was a genetic component, so you never know.

I'm glad you have the appointment so soon with the GI . . . sometimes it can take a month to 6 weeks around here to see a specialist unless your situation is acute. There are various possibilities, so it will take the hands on exam to find out for sure.

If you start running a fever, get medical attention as soon as possible.
