OTC remedies for anal fissure

I am 99% sure I have a anal fissure. EXTREME pain during BM, tearing feeling, blood.....tears. This has been going on for 1 1/2 years (post delivery of my child) and finally got a referral.

I had an appt yesterday with my gastroenterologist and she's going to examine me with an anoscope in 2 weeks. She prescribes me hydrocortisone suppositories and am instructed to take 6 tsp of Benefiber daily (which I've already been doing).

Is there anything I can do that's OTC until I see her in two weeks to relieve the pain? I've already tried the hemmroid cream and it doesn't seem to help in the least.

Thanks!

Mel

Re: OTC remedies for anal fissure

I have the very same thing you do. I have had it on and off for the last 2 years. I am currently suffering with the fissure issue right now. Everytime I get constipated or have a bout of diarrhea it reopens the sore or cut. It stings, burned and bleeds if I have a bm. I have some prescription suppositories and those help but it takes days to heal up even doing this. The pressure there makes me feel like I have to go to the bathroom again even when I don't. I just hope this is not something that will require a surgery at some point. I wish it would heal up for good. I don't know any other homemade remedies. Just the salt sitz bathes too. I am sorry you are suffering. You aren't alone.

Re: OTC remedies for anal fissure

Well it's official, I have 2 large fissures. I start the nitro today and continue the hydrocortisone. I have a colonoscopy scheduled for the 24th...yippee. I'm not as worried about that as I am for the prep the day before.

Re: OTC remedies for anal fissure

I've been on the hydrocortisone and nitro for the past week. It has MAYBE helped a little. I'm hoping things improve soon... fissures are horrible! Please let me know if this combination works for you, I'm curious to see how long it takes others to heal.

Ps. The salt sitz baths are key!

Re: OTC remedies for anal fissure

#1) Colace stool softners
#2) Soluable fiber ie Benefiber
#3) Lots of water
#4) Don't strain/push during a bowel movement...try ehxaling through your mouth if you must push a little.
#5) Avoid constipating foods

Hope this helps

Re: OTC remedies for anal fissure

I would not recommend continuing the hydrocortisone. It causes thinning of tissue when used for a extended period of time. You do not want to thin the tissue down there. Ask your doctor about cauterizing your fissure using silver nitrate. This is a less drastic procedure than surgery that can work.

This is an interesting approach which has never been offered...I have an appt with my coloraectal doc next week and will inquire.

Thanks

Re: OTC remedies for anal fissure

The nitroglycerine healed it but it has since torn again. I've never been constipated and have very thin loose stools.

I see my Gastro. doc next week, hopefully getting referred to a colorectal specialist!

Re: OTC remedies for anal fissure

So frustrating isn't it! It all started after I had my daughter in '07. I deal with it about 2 weeks out of every month and just when I think everything is better it tears again. It's frustrating because it's not because I'm constipated. I had a upper GI with small bowel follow through and CT scan last week because of abdominal pain that I have as well. I'm hoping they will find some answer for me.

Re: OTC remedies for anal fissure

You might not need surgery if you've followed some of the suggestions here. Hope you feel better.
