I'm a 28 years old male. For the last three months I've been having bouts of mucus and blood on the surface of the stool. The mucus has appeared in clumps around the stool, and the blood has always been a streak on the outside of the formed stool. I've been to my GP 4 times for this, one time he found an anal fissure. Finally I got referred to a GI. I had the GI appointment today and she wants to do a colonoscopy on me, which is scheduled for 8/17. She's not concerned about it being colon cancer; but I am!! She thinks maybe either colitis or crohn's. I thought with colitis or crohn's you need diarrhea??
Here are my symptoms in a nutshell
- Mucus on stool. Some stools have more than others.
- Blood streaks on stool. Only appears on some stools. Can go days without it appearing.
- Abdominal cramping/bloating. Have had two bouts of this in last three months which lasts for a few days and goes away.
- Rectal/anal pain. Another weird symptom that comes and goes in spurts of 4-5 days. Feels like something is hurting/stinging inside the rectum.
- Stools are lumpy/hard in the beginning, and soft at the end of each bowel movement. Bowel movement is once per day.
I know colon cancer is extremely rare at my age, but I am still worried!!
I was hoping it was hemorrhoids or a fissure, but the GI doctor said that neither of those produce mucus! Looking up colon cancer, mucus is definitely possible! This is going to be a long wait until 8/17!
What else could this be?

Hiya I posted a few weeks ago about a similar thing, mucus with bloody streaks followed a large soft but firm stool and my GP thinks Colitus too so am booked in soon for a scope to see whats going on, naturally I am scaring myself to death thinking its something terrible so I totally understand what you guys are going through too. BUT its impiortant to try, hahaah I say TRY cos I find it impossible, not to panic. It could be many many things and anxiety can make it all worse. I have ton loads of reading and so many stomach complaints are linked also to throat n sinus and allergies and anxioety and just loads of things. When are you booked in for the colonscopy. I have read so many posts on these boards fropm very worried people who have the scope and find out what it is and feel a million times better, i think its natural for us to worry its the worse until we have an actual answer. I am only 37 too but again still worry about it all. These boards are ghreat because you realise you arent alone and that people are really supportive.
Hope you don't mind me replying but your story sounds all to familiar. It could be me. I was diagnoised 10 months ago with Celiacs. I have been Gluten free since. This diet has been the ONLY thing that has made a differenc. I have been battling the very same issues as you for 30yrs. Recently though the rectum pain and hemroids have been more frequent and fistulas. Very aggrivating and frustrating. I had a Colonoscopy last Thurs., My Gastro doctor found a very severe case of IB and I bled for three days after the procedure. It was not fun. But necessary!! The reason for the anal and rectal pain as he explained to me was because I also have Spastic Sigmoid Colon. Thats the last part of your colon that leads to the rectum. He has put me on a new medicine to take an hour before meals to relax my colon. We'll see. My advice to you would be is to see a Gastro. specialist and have the proper test done. You can also try on your own to eat completely Gluten Free for 2 months and see if you see a positive change. You could be gluten intolerent. Look up some info. and see what you think. That's how I got all of my guidence and info when I started the diet and new way of eating. Its hard at first but the rewards are soooo worth it if it works for you. Good luck!!
hi guys, I'm also having some symptoms for about a year already, i have chronic mild abdominal pain (discomfort) in my left lower rib area, i can see mucus on the end part of my stool along with maroon colored mixed w/ my stool , im not sure if it's blood cause i tested for FOBT 6 times already and it came back negative.. i also had a CBC and i was not anemic my hemoglobin is a bit high.. i don't have thin stools and constipation, i get diarrhea once or twice a month.. im 32yo male.. my doctor seems to think it's costochondritis but I've been having a lot of gas and it's more evident when i am in a compressed position like sitting and leaning forward.. we don't' have history of polyps and cc on my family but im still worried and scared i can't sleep just thinking about it. i know i need a colonoscopy to find the answer but i don't have medical insurance =(
