I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

Hi,
I had sphincteroplasty and perennial repair 6 weeks back and I am still having pain after sitting for some time and I still can't sit on both sides. I am still taking pain medication(2- ibupru two times). Yesterday I also took vicodine as my pain was very bad. First 3 weeks were very bad. Then I got better and was able to move around and stuff. But I am still having pain and swelling on my bottom.
Is this normal? does anyone know how long it would take to heal completely?

Hi, Its been 8 wks for me now. Some times i still feel the need for a sitzbath if I have been on my feet a lot that day or have done a lot of sitting. My incission has been closed completely now for several weeks but occassionally i still see traces of blood when i have a bm. I still cant sit for long times flat on my hiney, i'm usually shifted to one side or the other but life it getting better. My doc has me taking lots of fiber suppliments into my diet. I have noticed that if i miss getting the fiber that i have problems. I'm doing kegels to try to strengthen, tone and regain more volunteery control of my sphincter muscles. 1 set of 10, 3 times a day and any other time i find myself just waiting (ie. traffic lights, dr.s appt, etc.). i notice also that it is hardest for me to control my muscle when i'm on my feet and shortly after having eaten. I hope this is helpful with your question. Stay in touch, good luck and many blessings.
Dont give up yet.
Sheila

it was helpful though i dont know what brand it was. it was something they sent me home from the hospital with. something sorta like an egg crate foam thing.... NOT a donut. if you sit wrong on the donut they tend to pull on the incission and can cause tears and bleeding.

good luck.
take care.

Re: I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

I'm amazed you are able to go back to work already. I am almost 11 weeks post-op and there is no way I could work yet. Luckily I am a stay at home mom these days (which is hard with this condition!)

Do you have any scar tissue? I have a large, hard area of scar tissue all around the surgery area. It used to be infected (for two months!) and now it is apparently "just" scar tissue. He said it will take a long time to "soften".

If anyone out there has/had extensive sphincteroplasty scar tissue, do you know how to get rid of it?

A really good pelvic floor physical therapist can help soften scar tissue in the pelvic area. You probably have to be a few more weeks or maybe months post-surgery before you can see one to help with that.

Re: I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

Hi Nancy,
I had a small scar tissue and last week my doc put some chemical(acid) on it and burned it. It hurt very bad after that but then it got better after couple of days. That scar tissue is gone now. She also said scar tissue forms since the inside heals before the skin comes...I work only 6 hrs and take coule of breaks in between. It is hard for me to work but my doc says when it hurts take pain meds and push yourself. So now i started taking vicodine when ibuprofen doesn't help and pushing myself.
Take care,
Jilu

Re: I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

Well things are going from bad to worse. The doctor who did my sphincteroplasty sent me to a colorectal specialist yesterday, and I am infected AGAIN.

I have an absess that is on it's way to becoming a fistula. I also have narrowing of the anal opening which might be a major problem. In order to do a complete exam of the situation, I have to been under anaesthesia for the exam, and I'm back on Avalox to kill the infection, again.

Friday is the exam, and I'll find out what's up. Looks like more surgery on the anus for me! This situation is absolute hell for me, and has been for 11 weeks and one day.

Re: I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

About the scar tissue - mine is huge, in a u-shape around the anus, under the skin. I don't think they can burn that, they have to get to it surgically. I won't know for sure until he does the exam on Friday, but I bet I'm headed for a colostomy bag, since I can't push out anything other than diarrhea. The scar tissue is like a huge obstruction.

I am losing the battle with my anxiety over this, 11 weeks is a long time to keep your chin up. I have lost 20 pounds, and I'm still losing, and all I can poop is diarrhea. I can't wait for Friday's exam, to see how bad the situation is.

Re: I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

I have good news and bad news - the scar tissue from the sphincteroplasty might not be as much of a problem as I thought, though I'm still not sure.

The obstruction is the recurrent infection I have in the surgery area. I have an abscess that won't heal and keeps infecting, and I've had two surgeries this past month, where they've created holes in my skin to give the abscess a place to drain. I essentially have two fistulas now, and I'm on antibiotics for the 5th time. I still haven't had a normal stool (4 months now) but I am hopeful, because when the infection clears up I seem to have an easier time in the bathroom.

Now if this abscess will just heal...

Re: I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

nancy07...I was not prepared mentally for this surgery....I kept feeling different in hospital....now I am at home....the pain killers suck....I am thankful for my friend who told me about this website...I have been comparing the stories...and what to expect next so that I am not so floored...when I held a mirror to see the outcome of surgery....If I was bold enough I would post a video on the net....Nancy07 are you able to drive and get around...or is it still painful to walk...I am walking but not far...Thanks for the info...I have calmed down a lot.

Re: I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

Hi Pam6026, I had sphincteroplasy 3 months back and still on pain medication. First 3 weeks were the hardest and then it gets better. I got some scars after that then Dr. put medicine to burn it..after that it got better. even now i have pain and they took scan and now they think i have ovarian cyst. That might be causing the pain on my perenial. Oh, well i am scheduled to have ultra sound for that today and we will see what the pain is from..

Re: I am surviving Sphincteroplasty -Help

Pam6026, you are so brave for looking at it! I couldn't look at it until at least two months after the surgery.

I can drive, I sit on a pillow, kind of tilted to the left. I would be able to sit by now if it werent' for this awful abscess. I can walk fine, except when the infection flares up. I don't think I have pain anymore from the sphincteroplasty, just the infected abscess.

Hang in there, and eventually things will get better. For me the pain wasn't really gone until 11 or 12 weeks post-op. You probably aren't going to get infected if you haven't yet so far, so hopefully you won't have to deal with that! The worst is over.

Jilu - I hope you feel better soon, and that your pain goes away! Maybe it is a quick fix to remove a cyst?
