Can diverticulitis make you feel really sick?

I have not felt well for just about 3 years - lots of nausea, no appetite, bowel issues (mostly loose/diarrhea), some cramps, tired. When this first started, a CT scan showed numerous diverticula in sigmoid and significant thickening of the the sigmoid wall. I had a colonoscopy about 6 weeks ago that showed mild diverticulitis in sigmoid. Did 4 weeks of levaquin/flagyl. 2 more CT scans still showed possible diverticulitis with significant thickening still present. (Biopsy showed no malignancy.) I have an appt. with a colorectal specialist in a couple of days. Could all of this make me feel so sick?

Diverticulitis can definitely bring on some nausea. I experienced intermittent nausea but no actual vomiting, loss of appetite, and intermittent intestinal cramps in addition to the pain. If you completed your antibiotics and you are still experiencing such symptoms, I wonder if the cause is something other than, possibly in addition to, your diverticular problem.

Hi Sciencelady! I have a question for you, about 3 years ago did you have any severe constipation problem? Have you had lots of gas? I notice the pictures of diverticulitis and diverticulosis look like perhaps gas has forced little pouches in the bowel walls. I have wondered if when a person has constipation and the gas has nowhere to go really then maybe it balloons out. Don't take that as gospel truth I am only putting a curious question out for people to think about. I know you said you had diarrhea, have you ever been checked for possible bacterial or protozoa infection etc? I also know someone whose diarrhea improved with a gluten free diet but that might only apply to someone with celiac disease not necessarily diverticulosis or diverticulitis.

In short, Yes.

I have had Pain, Diarrhea, bloating, nausea, shortness of breath and a general feeling of fatigue...

Come to find out, my last diverticulitis attack perforated my colon and the fatigue is from the toxicity of what is leaking into my abdominal cavity.

So yes, it can generally make you feel like crap. (no pun intended)

Definitely follow up with your Doctor.

Also, I would suggest going on chicken broth and other clear liquids for a couple of days with absolutely no gluten or dairy. Your observations as you gradually add things back to your diet can help your doctor figure out if there are other things going on.
