Hi, Everyone - I had my sphincterotomy Monday (four days ago) and the bleeding had just about stopped; however, today when I felt I might have a bowel movement, instead I saw bright red bleeding. I got up so as not to cause any more bleeding and took a Senna Plus tablet (already had taken several stool softeners earlier). How long should this bleeding last or when should I be worried enough to call my surgeon?

I had a similar thing happen too. The bleeding went away the next day though. I hope you are doing better today. If you have a lot of bleeding or you just need reassurance, don't hesitate to contact your surgeon.

Keep the area clean with sitz baths and use moist cloth/tissue or water (squirt bottle) to clean after bm. Dry the area with a blow dryer on cool setting if possible. But careful with the stool softners and such...you don't want diarrhea. It will irritate the area.

Thank you so much for your reply, Holdingon. The bleeding has definitely slowed down and it still bleeds most after a BM. These have finally been easier and less concentrated because of my concerted efforts to eat WAY more fiber than usual and to continue drinking great amounts of water. I haven't taken any softeners today so hope this means I'm on the mend. The pain is still pretty bad, though - I really don't see how people can go back to work soon after having this operation. I haven't even thought about driving a car anywhere at this point!
