Surgery-should I or shouldn't I? Help me out....

I'm pretty new to this whole DV world so am looking for advice from the veterans. For the past 3 years, I've been not feeling well - no appetite, nausea, bowel troubles (mostly loose/diarrhea). Every few weeks I'd have an "upset" where I would wake up very constipated, after a few hours of lots of cramping, it would let loose, then there would be blood mucous for a couple of days, then things would settle down. I thought I had IBS. Had a colonoscopy in July where doc. found mild diverticulitis. After being on Flagyl/Levaquin for a month and having two CT scans, he said it cleared up. I still didn't feel right, can hardly eat, lots of bowel trouble, noises, discomfort in lower middle and lower left. I made an appt. at a colorectal specialist. After reading the CT scan reports and talking with me, he said that my sigmoid colon is significantly thickened, probably from numerous small DV infections over the years. It also has some ischemia (decreased blood supply which leads to damaged tissue). He said that it won't get any better on it own and that surgery would probably make me feel better. I'm leaning towards having it removed. This has gone on lone enough. What do you all think?

I can only speak from my own personal experence, you are probably headed that way. had the surgery about 5 years ago at age 45. It was not that bad of a recovery at all. I had repeated bouts of diverticulits before I agreed to the surgery . I should have done t sooner. How old are you ? Greg

Hi Greg - Thanks for your reply. I am 53 and scheduled for surgery on Sept. 30. I can't lie - I'm a bit nervous about it. Can you ease my fears at all?

I am not saying I didn't have a high level of anxiety ( I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder) , but it ws not near as bad as I thought it would be. One of the worst things was the "prep" including mutiple antibiotics the day before; I went in for surgery on a Weds, and left he hospital on Sat morning. From others I have talked to , this is a pretty typical stay. I was up walking around the day of the surgery. Will your surgery be laproscopically assisted ?

I had the lap surgery 6/09. 12" removed of my sigmoid. No problems with it since. I can eat anything I want, but I'm still a little leary of seeds and nuts. I have had them with no problems, I just take it easy with them. I'm scheduled for my first colonoscopy since surgery for this Friday. I've had one before, but just nervous about what they may find. Hopefully nothing. Good luck with the surgery. I will pray you feel better soon! BTW I'm 53 also.
