Unhappy Anyone Else Humiliated by Anal Leakage????

Hi,

I'm new to board & was just wondering how other people deal with anal leakage. . . I have to wear panty shields everyday & even then my underwear still feels damp. I'm so embarrassed that I've never told anyone what's going on w/me. I have all the symptoms of rectal prolapse but doctor only suggested Kegal exercises -- (probably because it's "cost effective" for the HMO).

I'd love to hear back from anyone else who suffers from these symptoms. . .

Thanks,

Tristesse

Re: Anyone Else Humiliated by Anal Leakage????

I had initial leakage 25 years after a tear during childbirth. I have to say I really wish I had tried kegels before I had a sphincteroplasty which was supposed to solve the problem, because it made it much worse. After I had leakage after every movement, every day. I began taking align, fiber pills with psyllum husk and imodium and my symptoms have improved substantially. You might try it and see if it's helpful. Do you know why you're leaking?

Re: Anyone Else Humiliated by Anal Leakage????

Hi- I suffer from the same thing. Mine was from a birth injury to my sphincters. I am a year into this now. I try and just deal with it until I have surgery. I find taking a prenatal vitamin helps bulk up the stool and causes less leakage. I am also going to try what Penny recommends too. The less leakage the better. I might feel somewhat normal again. Hang in their!

Re: Anyone Else Humiliated by Anal Leakage????

Thank you ladies - I appreciate the responses. It's interesting that both of you have this condition as a result of childbirth. What is the medical term for your condition? Mine (I think) was caused by laxative use & constipation because of pain medication. I no longer use either but don't know if condition ("loose anus") will ever improve by itself.

Also, I appreciate your feedback re: sphincteroplasty - - not sure what that is but will look it up. I dread the thought of surgery but also can't stand thought of wearing Kotex the rest of my life!!!

I think the term for the injury is laceration of the anal sphincters. If I were you, I would try Kegels first before doing any surgery. As long as your sphincters are intact I would try to strengthen the muscle. Do your Kegels everyday and you should notice a difference in some time.
